Black Sox defeat Australia
Saturday February 5th 2005, 6:30pm

A dominating performance on the mound from Marty Grant and strong
hittingby Rhys Casley has seen the New Zealand Community Trust
Black Sox defeatAustralia 3-0 at the Evodrive Series in Rotorua
today.

New Zealand is unbeaten in the tournament at Rotorua InternationalStadium
and they continued their winning ways today. 

Australia had no answer to the dominance of Marty Grant on the
mound forthe Black Sox as he tied the visiting side’s batters
in knots with greatpace and movement of the ball. 

Grant faced 26 batters giving up just four hits while taking
tenstrikeouts in the process. The Wellington based pitcher also
did wellfielding off his own pitching making three assists in
the game.

Another Black Sox player to stand out was Hutt Valley outfielder
RhysCasley who made the game safe for New Zealand in the bottom
of the sixthinning with a big homerun over the left field fence
with one runner onbase.

The Black Sox scored their first run of the game in the top of
the secondinning when 
Patrick Shannon scored on a double from Brad Rona.

Victory over Australia cam on the back of a win earlier today
over Japan8-3 when the Black Sox showed their ability to fight
back as they camefrom 3-1 down to score seven runs in the third
inning and take out thegame.

While it has been a busy day for the Black Sox it is not over
yet theyhave a game against the All Stars starting at 5pm followed
by a match upwith Samoa at 7.30pm.

Samoa 4Japan 0, Japan 4 Australia 3 (tie breaker), All Stars
