Southern Pride blast into men's top four + W/P L/P
Saturday December 10th

A double dose of victory today for Southern Pride has propelled them into
the top four in the New Zealand Community Trust Men’s National league with
one day of round robin play still to go.

Going into the final weekend of round robin play Southern Pride were in
fifth spot on the points table but two wins today over Central Vikings at
Hataitai Park, Wellington has lifted them into finals contention.

The top four sides after round robin play will contest the finals series
next weekend and after today’s results Southern Pride are on the verge of
making the finals for the first time in the franchises history.

It was a scratchy win in the first game of the day for Southern Pride as
they defeated Central Vikings 3-0. Stand out performer for the Southern men
was pitcher Michael Gaiger who was elusive on the mound. Gaiger faced 25
batters giving up just three walks and no hits while taking a massive 15
strikeouts.

While Gaiger was dominant on the mound the Southern sides hitters were
doing just enough with the bat as first Derryn French scored in the third
inning and then Bevan Passmore and Louis Joglor both scored in the fourth
inning on a home run over the centre field fence by Joglor.

While his side tasted defeat Central Vikings pitcher John Hireme put in a
strong performance on the mound he faced 28 batters picking up seven strike
outs while giving up eight hits and two walks.

The second game of the double header was a lot tighter before Southern
Pride came out on top 5-4.

Central Vikings took the early lead in the game scoring in the first inning
and then went further ahead in the second inning with another two runs.

While the Southern side were down in the game they weren’t out for the
count as in the bottom of the second inning they pulled the bats out of the
bag and smashed five runs courtesy of three home runs off the bats of Nigel
Kelly, Bevan Passmore and Louis Joglor.

Central Vikings kept fighting in the game and they went close pulling back
one run in the fifth inning but it wasn’t enough allowing Southern Pride
take out the win 5-4.

On the mound Leiws Acker threw a winning game for Southern Pride he faced
31 batters giving up six hits and three walks while taking two strikeouts.
For Central Vikings Penese Iosefo was the man on the mound he faced 37
batters giving up nine hits and one walk and taking five strikeouts.

The other side in contention for the top four is Hutt Valley and they
started the day well with an upset victory over Auckland 3-1. But they
couldn’t maintain that form in the second game of the double header as they
then went down to Auckland 3-0.

The top four in the men’s national league will be finalised tomorrow at the
completion of round robin play. And the crucial games tomorrow will see
Southern Pride playing North Harbour twice and Hutt Valley taking on the
defending champions Wellington in a double header.
