NZCT MEN’S OPEN CLUB TOURNAMENT
Akina Park, Hastings

Wednesday March 22nd – Sunday March 26th

Fight for national club supremacy in the Bay
Thursday March 16th 2005

The country’s elite male softball players will be taking to the
diamondsof Akina Park, Hasting next week as they compete in the
New ZealandCommunity Trust Men’s National Club Championships.

The 2005/06 tournament brings 25 club sides from around the country
andthe fight for the title is expected to be intense with close
to a dozensides looking strong enough on paper to take out the
title.

Hawkes Bay Softball executive officer Mark Carter believes the
five daytournament will be a great chance to the regions sports
fans to watchsome of the world’s best softball players in action.

“It will be a great tournament with 25 teams full of some of
the topsoftballers in New Zealand,” said Carter.

There will be two Hawkes Bay based club sides competing in the
form ofHawkes Bay Harvest, Tamatea. But Carter says there will
also be a lot oflocal interest in a number of the visiting teams
such as Metro, Mt AlbertRamblers and Porirua who all have former
Hawkes Bay players in theirranks.

Mt Albert Ramblers go into the tournament as the defending championshaving
defeated Miramar in the final last season. They will be strongagain
this season with power hitters such as NZCT Black Sox playersNathan
Nukunuku, Donny Hale, Lyndon Andrew and Travis Wilson in theirline-up.
Vital to the performance of the defending champions will be theform
of international pitcher Thomas Cameron who has been plagued
byinjuries this season.

Likely contenders for the title include last season runners up
Miramarwho have the pitching depth to go one better. Also looking
strong isNorthcote who have NZCT Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin
on the moundalong with a majority of the North Harbour side who
took out the NZCTNational League title earlier in the season.

Other teams who will fancy their title chances are Metro from
Auckland,Porirua, Parklands Christchurch United, Hutt City United
and PonekeKilbirnie. All these sides have the hitting power to
demolish any team inthe tournament, pitching strength and class
players in keypositions.

Another factor in the tournament will be the prospect of nationalselection
as NZCT Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase prepares to name a teamto
travel to the Pacific Cup tournament in Japan next month.
