NZCT WOMEN’S OPEN CLUB TOURNAMENT
Foundation Park, Christchurch

Thursday March 23rd – Sunday March 26th

Last chance to impress
Thursday March 16th 2006

As the countdown for the 2006 women’s World Softball Championships
movesinto the final stages the New Zealand Community Trust National
ClubChampionships to be held in Christchurch next week will be
the lastchance to impress the national selectors.

The world championships will be staged in Beijing, China in late
Augustand New Zealand Community Trust White Sox coach Mike Walsh
will name his17 person squad for the championships in early April.

Walsh says the national club championships to be played at FoundationPark,
Christchurch will be important in assessing the current form
of allthe athletes in the frame for selection before the NZCT
White Sox teamfor the world champs is named.

“This will be part of the selection process, it is the last major
eventbefore the team is named and for some players the tournament
will becrucial,” said Walsh.

Going into the tournament with world champ selection in mind
Walsh sayshe will be looking for continued improvement from all
the athletesstriving for selection and the decision making from
the players bothdefensively and offensively in the crucial moments
of the keygames.

Hutt Valley based club Te Aroha go into the tournament as the
two timedefending champions and with a line up that includes
eight current orformer internationals they will be hard to beat.

Key to the success of the Te Aroha side will be the performance
of youngpitcher Jessica Hau who has had limited time out in the
middle thisseason due to injury. Also looking for big performances
with world champsselection in mind will be Cindy Potae, Shirley
Povey, Nadia Mauriohooho,Melisa Upu and Zavana Aranga.

Challenges to Te Aroha’s title run are likely to come from Albion,Parklands
Christchurch United, Miramar, Northcote and Auckland Marist.

Northcote, under the coaching of ex NZCT Black Sox member Dean
Rice, haveshown they are a force to be reckoned with at a number
of clubtournaments since the Christmas break.

Albion and Parklands Christchurch United hold home advantage
so to speakand will be tough. Albion has New Zealand Softball’s
2004/05 FemalePlayer of the year Sheree Cartwright on the mound
and NZCT White Soxtraining squad member Te Awhina Hewer catching.

Parklands Christchurch United boasts experienced players such
as KatieNewman, Nic Pouaka- Grego, Char Pouaka, Lisa Kersten,
Melanie Hulme andAngela Hammond in the line up.
