Defending champs start playoffs with a bang
Friday March 24th 2006 - (midnight)

Mt Albert Ramblers defending champions at the New Zealand Community
Trust Men's Open Club Championships have sent a message today
to their opposition in the top eight playoffs at Akina Park,
Hastings today.

In the opening top eight game Ramblers were in powerful form
as they demolished Richmond Keas 10-2 in just five innings. The
game was set up for the defending champs in the first inning
when with loaded bases NZCT Black Sox catcher Lyndon Andrew smashed
the ball out of the park for a grand slam home run to give his
side a four run advantage after just the first inning.

It was a great game with the bat for Andrew who picked up two
home runs in the game while Michael Cameron also did some damage
with the bat with one home run. Richmond Keas had few answers
while they managed two runs they couldn't contain the power of
the Ramblers hitters.

Also starting the top eight playoffs well tonight was Parklands
Christchurch United who upset the previously unbeaten Northcote
8-3. A star for PCU was Blair Murphy who hit two home runs in
the game, one in the first inning to score three runs and another
in the third inning to score two more runs.

PCU were not the only team with home run hitters though as Northcote
picked up one of their own off the bat of Orlando Rodriguez but
it wasn't enough as PCU out hit Northcote in the game 10 to four.

In other top eight playoff results Hutt City United maintained
their unbeaten run with a 3-1 win over Miramar while Metro were
too strong for Rotorua Magic 9-0.

The top eight playoffs continue tomorrow as the teams compete
to win a place in the final on Sunday.
