Tight softball at women’s national club champs
Friday March 24th 2006

Day two of the New Zealand Community Trust Women’s National Club
Championships at Foundation Park, Christchurch has been marked
by some tight results between the top ranked sides.

The big hitting form side of day one Northcote were made to work
hard in their first game today as they came from behind to defeat
Waitakere Bears 3-2 in a tie breaker.
Bears worked hard throughout the game and looked to have victory
within their grasp but they couldn’t close the game out.

Northcote opened the scoring in the first inning when Maleme
Williams continued her strong form from day one picking up a
safe hit to centre field and scoring on a safe hit by Katie Hetherington.

Down by one run Waitakere Bears struck back in the fourth inning
when a trio of hits from the Bromhead sisters gave the Bears
a one run advantage. Rebecca Bromhead got the ball rolling in
the fourth inning with a safe hit and then sister Tegan did the
same before both scored on a hit to left field by sister number
three Kyla.

Northcote struck back in the sixth inning this time with Hetherington
scoring on a hit by Aroha Haretuku. That run tied the scores
at 2-2 and that is how it stayed through the regulation seven
innings.

In the top of the first tie breaker inning Northcote batted first
and scored the go ahead run via Jackie Smith who came home on
a wild pitch. Holding a one run advantage going into the bottom
inning Northcote executed a good double play in the field to
defuse the threat from Waitakere Bears and win the game.

It was also tight in section B where Wainui were handed their
first defeat of the tournament at the hands of Auckland Marist
3-2.

It was a case of missed opportunities for Wainui as they out
hit their Auckland Marist opposition six to four but they couldn’t
turn those hits into runs. Auckland Marist always had the lead
in the game after they scored first in the top of the third inning
when Lisa Arkell came home on a fielding error after originally
getting on base with a walk.

Wainui struck back with one run in the fifth inning with Aimee
Gilbert scoring but Auckland Marist then went further ahead in
the top of the sixth inning when Michelle Kingi and Ritua Petero
both scored.

The final fight back from Wainui came in the bottom of the seventh
inning as they scored one run through Gilbert again. The decisive
play of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when
with Wainui at bat and a runner on third NZCT White Sox captain
Fiona Timu showed her class forcing the out at home to deny the
game tying run and give the win to Auckland Marist.

The final day of round robin play in the tournament will be held
tomorrow as all the teams compete to finish in the top two in
their section and win their way through to the tournament semi
finals and final on Sunday.
