Junior White Sox pick up first win at Canada Cup Futures tournament
Wednesday July 5th 2006 

Day two of the Canada Cup Futures tournament in Vancouver has
been asuccessful one for the Junior White Sox as they have picked
up a 7-5victory over Surrey Storm.

The highlight of the game came in the seventh inning when Hutt
Valley’sLara Andrews smashed a home run over the left field fence
with one runneron base to secure the victory for the Junior White
Sox. 

The Junior White Sox started the game strongly scoring in the
firstinning on a throwing error and then adding three more runs
in the secondinning courtesy of a double by Carmelle Sorensen
from Canterbury andfielders choice off the bat of Hawkes Bay’s
Melanie Gettins. 

Surrey Storm were also strong with the bat scoring runs in the
openingtwo innings to give the New Zealand team a 4-2 after the
openingexchanges. The Kiwi team went further ahead in the sixth
inning when HuttValley’s Katrina Stockford scored on a sacrifice
fly by Sorensen. Then in the seventh inning the game was wrapped
up for the Junior WhiteSox with the home run from Andrews. 

There were a number of strong performers with the bat for New
Zealand ledby Sorensen who picked up two hits and two sacrifice
hits in the gamewhile Stockford reached base with every at bat.
On the mound CourtneyMaihi of Waikato pitched the full game facing
33 batters and taking fivestrikeouts while giving up three walks
and nine hits. 

The Junior White Sox will be back on the diamond tomorrow for
day threeof the tournament when they have a double header with
games againstO’Kanagan Wildfire (9am NZ time) and White Rock
Renegades (11.30am NZtime).
