Canada takes advantage of Venezuela Errors to Escape Elimination

(Surrey, BC) - In a classic defensive styled game, Canada held
on to defeat Venezuela by a score of 2-1 to advance to the next
round of Canada Cup playoffs.

Canada took to an early lead in the first inning taking advantage
of two Venezuela errors that seen Tamra Howren (Surrey, BC) drive
in Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) followed by Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,
SK) driving in Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) giving Canada a
2 run lead.

Venezuela responded in the second inning cutting Canada's lead
to 1 run. Defensive play took over as both teams were held scoreless
for the remainder of the ball game. Combined, both teams produced
only 5 hits throughout the ball game.

Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) picked up the win holding Venezuela
to 1 run on 3 hits striking out 6 in five and one third innings
of work. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) who came in to relieve
Holtz, managed to retire 7 of the 8 outs by way of strikeout.

With the win, Canada will face Japan Elite at 8:30pm. Canada
will need to defeat Japan Elite to earn the right to play in
the semi finals on Sunday July, 09. For complete statistical

In other Canada Cup playoff action - Canada Elite fell to Japan
Elite by a score of 4-2 ending their Canada Cup playoff run.

Canada Elite's Brittany Freight (Placentia, CA) started the scoring
with a single in the second inning scoring pinch runner Shannon
Robinson (Toronto, ON) to give Canada a 1-0 lead.

After allowing Japan Elite to score 4 unanswered runs and take
a 3 run lead late in the sixth, Erin Gee (Burnaby, BC) sparked
life for Canada Elite late in the seventh driving in Daniela
Pappano (Bolton, ON) to cut Japan Elite's lead to 2 runs.

Sarah Belanger (Winnipeg, MB) was credited with the loss allowing
4 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings of work. Despite producing 11
hits, Canada Elite could not execute with runners in scoring
position.

The loss has eliminated Canada Elite from the Canada Cup tournament
and put an end to their season. While some of Canada Elite's
athletes will be named as alternates for the National Team, most
will return to their home provinces to play for their club teams.
