White Sox score late to defeat South Africa
Monday August 28th 2006

The New Zealand Community Trust White Sox have claimed their
firstvictory at the 2006 Women’s Softball World Championships
in Beijing,China with a 2-0 win over South Africa tonight.

It was a nail biting affair for the New Zealand team as they
waited untilthe bottom of the sixth inning to string some hits
together and have animpact on the score board.

The difference in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning
whenoutfielder Kalala Gabriel put the White Sox in front when
she scored on adouble by Melisa Upu. Katrina Stockford was then
introduced into the gameas a pinch runner for Upu and after advancing
to third base on afielders’ choice she then scored on a pass
ball to give the White Sox a2-0 advantage.

Gabriel came into the game as a substitute off the bench and
says whileit was a tough encounter the team just kept on hitting
and eventually thescore came.

While the White Sox hitters were fighting hard in the batters
box pitcherAli Arnold was strong on the mound. Arnold pitched
the full game givingup just three hits.

With their first win of the tournament under their belts the
White Soxwill now be looking to continue that form when they
have a crunch gameagainst Italy tomorrow at 11.30pm (NZ time).

The 16 teams at the world championships are split into two pools
forround robin play and if the White Sox want to contest for
the title theyfirst have to qualify in the top four from their
pool.

Both the White Sox and Italy go into tomorrow’s game with a one
win oneloss record. White Sox coach Mike Walsh while happy with
the teams wintoday said the team now have to look forward and
prepare well for Italy.

Other results on day two of the tournament today have seen Greece
defeatBotswana 8-0, USA beat DPR Korea 7-1, Canada win over Great
Britain 5-1while Japan were too strong for Venezuela 7-1 and
Chinese Taipei defeatedthe Netherlands 7-0. In other news from
day two Colombia have withdrawnfrom the tournament due to visa
