Wyevale, ON

The first round saw the Tribe pitted against the Sydenham Amey's
out of the Loughborough Fastball League. The Tribe came flying
out of the gates scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st after a
leadoff double by Graham McNabb and RBI singles by Mike Kelly,
and Kevin Peterson. Sydenham quickly answered in the bottom
scoring 2 runs of their own off of Tribe starter, McNabb. The
Tribe fired right back scoring another in the 2nd inning with
an RBI single by Mark Lambie scoring McNabb from 2nd base. Graham
McNabb took the 3-2 lead and cruised through the next 5 innings,
keeping the Amey's hitters off balance. The Tribe led 5-3 going
into the 7th inning after they scored one in the 5th, and both
teams swapped runs in the sixth inning. Wyevale added 2 runs
to their lead in the top of the 7th with RBI hits by Peterson,
and Kyle Lapham. The Amey's tried to make it interesting in
the 7th, taking advantage of 2 Tribe miscues in the field and
plating two runs to cut the lead to 2. With runners on, the
Wyevale called upon Jason Giffen from the pen to cement the victory
and he did, stranding the runners and picking up the save in
the process. Final Score: Tribe 7 – Amey’s 5. Graham McNabb
got the win and the game MVP going 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing
3ER, on 8H while striking out 11 Ameys.

The 2nd game had the Tribe facing off against the Brewers of
Elora. Graham McNabb led off the game with a homerun to right
field, and the Tribe quickly took a 1-0 lead. Other than that
blemish the Elora pitcher settled in from there on out, scattering
the few hits there was over the next 6 innings and limiting the
Tribe to that only run. Wyevale starter Jason Giffen looked
solid; battling out of early jams with clutch strikeouts, protected
the one run lead, until the 6th inning. In the 6th, Elora tied
the game after 2 hits and a Tribe error, but was limited to only
1 run. Both teams failed to break the dead lock in the 7th,
and so the teams headed to extras with the score tied at 1 run
apiece. With the International rule in effect, Wyevale was unable
to plate the runner from second in the top of the 8th. Elora
pressed in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Elora had
the runner to 3rd base on a SAC fly. Giffen intentionally walked
Greg Scheet, and then walked Jeff Detta to load the bases. But
Giffen nailed down the 3rd and final out to get out of the inning.
The Tribe responded in a big way in the top of the 9th scoring
4 runs on RBI hits by McNabb, Lambie, and Peterson, and came
out with a 5-1 lead. Giffen secured 5-1 victory for Wyevale
in the bottom of the inning striking out the 1st Elora batter,
and inducing 2 Fly balls. Game MVP went to Kevin Peterson after
another 2-4 game, while honourable mention has to go to Jason
Giffen for throwing 9 strong innings allowing only the 1 run.

The undefeated Tribe then matched up against the undefeated Kitchener
Phoenix Outlaws Saturday night. This was a pitcher’s duel right
from the hop as Kitchener Starter Mel Ross, and Wyevale’s Graham
McNabb, brought their “A” game. McNabb pitched 5 scoreless innings
to start the game, scattering 3 hits, and collecting 5Ks, and
then gave way to Jason Giffen. Ross limited the Tribe batters
to 3 hits through 6 innings, while striking out 12. The scoring
began in the top of the 7th inning, as the Tribe scraped together
a run, after a lead-off single by Mike Kelly, who advanced to
second on a SB, and subsequently scored on a 2 Phoenix throwing
errors. The Phoenix appeared to be down and out in the bottom
of the inning, until Jim Culling blasted a solo homerun to left
field to tie the game, and send it to extras in dramatic fashion.
No runs were plated in the 8th, as both Ross, and Giffen battled
out of jams. The top of the 9th saw the Tribe take the lead
once again after a miscue by the Kitchener shortstop allowed
the runner from second to score. Unfortunately for the Tribe,
the win was not to be, as in the bottom of the inning, Mel Ross
led off with a two run homerun to centre field off of Giffen
to win the game for Kitchener 3-2, handing the Tribe their first
loss of the tourney.

On Sunday morning the Tribe found themselves facing elimination
against the Niagara Snappers. Jason Giffen was given the ball
by the Tribe, while the Snappers gave the start to M. Bateman.
The Snappers struck first in the top of the 1st when Trevor
Falk led off with a single, and was brought home on a double
by Bateman. Giffen got out of the early jam only allowing the
one Snapper run. Giffen settled in from here on out--cruising
the rest of the way, holding the Snappers hitless and scoreless
and leaving the fate of the game in the Tribe’s bats. Unfortunately
for the Tribe there bats were silent on this day. In the 6th
spurred by the rally cries of one Tink Tickler, Lambie finally
broke up Bateman’s no hitter, and things looked as if they might
start to turn, but the Tribe couldn’t capitalize. In the bottom
of the 7th with their backs up against the wall, Trace Leonard
led off with a single, and made it to 3rd base after a Sac bunt
and a passed ball.. But alas, Wyevale was unable to capitalize,
stranding Leonard at 3rd, and losing the game 1-0.

Tourney Totals:

Hitting:

Graham McNabb (4/15,HR,4R,3RBI)
Kevin Peterson (5/14, 1R, 4RBI)
Mark Lambie (5/14, 2R, 2RBI)

Pitching:

Graham McNabb: (11.2IP,11H,16K,1BB,6ER)

The Tribe ended up tied for 5th place after all was said and
done, with a 2-2 record. Congrats to the Kitchener Phoenix who
ended up winning the tourney, defeating Elora in the final 4-0,
remaining undefeated. Next stop for the Tribe is SRFL playoffs
where they are currently in semi-final action against the Countrymen
of Vasey. Vasey will face elimination this Thursday as the Tribe
rolls into town with a 2-1 series lead, after a 3-0 Tribe victory
last night.
