Australia on winning run

The Australian Open Women’s team, Aussie Spirit, won its third
consecutive game at the China Cup currently being played at the
Fengtai Softball Field in Beijing.

In just four innings Aussie Spirit were too powerful for the
Chinese pitchers scoring 16-1, with exceptional performances
from Stacey Porter who hit a grand slam and Sandra Allen going
four for four.

Kelly Hardie started the game pitching three innings with Felicity
Witt closing the game down in the fourth and final innings.

Aussie Spirit got on a roll in the second innings scoring a massive
seven runs to take a strong lead early in the game.

Tracey Mosley was walked and was moved around the diamond by
her team mates, Sandra Allen and Danica Howlett. Howlett advanced
both Mosley and Allen on an error to short stop.

With loaded bases, Kate Judd was walked, bringing home Mosley
and Australia's first run. The Australian runners were able to
capitalise on a second baseman's error that allowed Allen to
score, Judd safe at second and Kerry Wyborn safe at first.

Natalie Titcume came in to pinch hit with loaded bases and singled
to centre scoring Howlett.

Stacey Porter stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam over
the right field fence adding four runs to the growing tally,
and taking Australia to a 7-0 lead.

In the third innings, Aussie Spirit continued to dominate with
their bats. Allen led off with a single to centre, backing her
up was Howlett with a single to second. Jodie Bowering then singled
to right scoring Allen and advancing Howlett to third.

A change of pitcher for China couldn’t stop Australia with Judd
scoring Howlett and Melinda Weaver entering the game having an
immediate impact by scoring Bowering.

Porter was intentionally walked, loading the bases once again
for Australia. Mosley was hit by a pitched ball bringing home
Judd. Allen singled to short stop scoring Weaver and the innings
ended with Australia in a 12 run lead.

The fourth innings started well again for the Australian team
with Judd singling to centre and Clare Warwick following suit.

China again changed their pitcher, but to no avail with Kylie
Cronk scoring Judd with a single. Porter and Mosley were walked
and a wild pitch sent Warwick home safely. Allen came to the
box with loaded bases again and slammed a double to centre field
scoring Cronk and Porter taking Australia to 16-0 at the end
of the dig.

China scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning
but it was not enough to prevent the run ahead rule being applied.
Australia run out winners 16 runs to one.

In yesterday’s games, Australia defeated Chinese Taipei 9-4 and
Canada 2-0.

Australia will meet China again today at 11.30am (AEST).
