CanadianSoftball Team improves record to 3-1

(Beijing,China) – Canada’s Senior Women’s Softball Team continued
its strong play at theChina Cup after holding on for a 3-2 victory
over Chinese Taipei early thismorning. After Canada scored three
runs early in the game, Chinese Taipeifought back for two runs
in the sixth but that was as close as they would get.

Canadaopened the scoring with a two out rally in the bottom of
the second inning. SheenaLawrick (Calgary, AB) led off with a
walk, and moved to third after a sacrificebunt and a groundout
to first. Caitlin Lever (Amherst, New York) then delivereda two-out
RBI single, stole second base and later scored on a passed ball.After
Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) walked and advanced to second,
Erin McLean(Whitby, ON) hit an RBI single up the middle to bring
Matthews to the plate,pushing the lead to 3-0.

Afterthree quick innings, Chinese Taipei finally got on the board
in the top of thesixth. After Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) struck
out the two first batters,the following hitter reached on an
error, followed by a pair of hits and a hitbatter, scoring the
first Chinese run. Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) then came onto
pitch and walked the next batter to score another run before
striking outthe final Chinese hitter, cutting the damage to 3-2.
She then retired the sidein the seventh to earn the save.

Lawriescattered eight hits over five and two thirds innings of
work, allowing onlyone earned run while striking out seven. Meier
struck out two batters in aninning and a third of relief.

CaitlinLever led Canada at the plate, going three-for-three with
a run batted in and arun scored, while Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,
SK) also contributed with twohits. Erin McLean and Tamra Howren
(White Rock, BC) each connected for singles,rounding out the
hits for the red and white.

Canada(3-1) will play its next game against unbeaten Australia
(4-0) tonight (9:30pmEDT) before taking on China early tomorrow
morning (5:00am EDT) to conclude thepreliminary round.

L’équipede softball canadienne améliore sa fiche à  3-1

(Beijing,Chine) – L’équipe de softball senior féminine du Canada
a continué sa bonneperformance à la Coupe de Chine après avoir
remporté leur match contre leTaipei chinois tôt ce matin par
la marque de 3 à 2. Après que le Canada amarqué à trois reprises
tôt dans la partie, le Taipei chinois a répondu avecdeux points
en début de sixième, mais leurs efforts n’ont pas été plus loin.

LeCanada a encore une fois ouvert le pointage avec deux retraits
en fin dedeuxième manche. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) a obtenu
une passe gratuite surles buts et s’est rendue au troisième coussin
sur un amorti et un roulant aupremier but. Caitlin Lever (Amherst,
New York) a ensuite délivré un simple pourproduire le premier
point, a volé le deuxième but et a croisé le marbre plus tardsur
une balle qui s’est échappée de la receveuse. Après que Melanie
Matthews(Surrey, C-B) a obtenue un but sur balles et a avancé
au deuxième but, ErinMcLean (Whitby, ON) a cogné un simple pour
pousser Matthews au marbre, créantune avance de 3 à 0.

Aprèstrois manches rapides, le Taipei chinois a finalement répliqué
en début desixième manche. Après que Danielle Lawrie (Langley,
C-B) a retiré les deuxpremières frappeuses sur des prises, la
prochaine frappeuse s’est rendue surles sentiers grâce à une
erreur, ce qui a été suivi d’une paire de coups sûrset une frappeuse
franchie par une bale, produisant le premier point chinois.Dione
Meier (Saskatoon, SK) a fait son entrée dans le cercle des lanceuses
avecles coussins remplis, laissant la prochaine frappeuse atteindre
le premier butsur des balles pour le deuxième point chinois avant
de retirer la prochainefrappeuse sur des balles. Elle a ensuite
retiré les trois frappeuses enseptième manche pour préserver
la victoire de 3-2.

Lawriea éparpillé huit coups sûrs en cinq manches et deux tiers
de travail,n’allouant qu’un seul point mérité avec sept retraits
au bâton. Meier a retirédeux frappeuses sur des prises en une
manche et un tiers de relève.

CaitlinLever a mené l’attaque du Canada avec trois coups sûrs
en trois présences aubâton, un point produit et un point marqué,
alors qu’Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,SK)  a aussi contribué avec
deux coups sûrs. Erin McLean et Tamra Howren(White Rock, C-B)
ont chacun cogné un simple pour compléter l’attaque du rougeet
blanc.

Canada(3-1) jouera son prochain match contre l’Australie (4-0)
ce soir (21 :30HAE) avant d’affronter la Chine tôt demain matin
(5 :00 HAE) pour conclurela ronde préliminaire.
