Gil Read Memorial Tournament – Ottawa, ON

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Editor’s Note: Great post below from our good friend Adam Brown of Fitzroy Harbour. Note the name of the winning pitcher for Team Easton on Sunday … none other than ISC II strikeout king Corey Costello. Is Costello making the trip to Appleton with Team Easton? No one knows for sure, but he is on the roster.

Beautiful weather, a great venue, and a superbly run tournament were in store for the eight fastball teams that attended the 1st annual Gil Read Memorial Fastball Tournament in Ottawa Ontario on July 4th-6th 2008.

The Carp team, sponsored by I4C Consulting and normally playing under the name “I4C Victory”, entered the tournament as the “I4C Pirates” and wore yellow and black “PIRATES” jerseys as a tribute to Gil Read. Gil coached several of the Carp players during their younger days with the Kanata Pirates minor softball team. Carp was without many of its regular players for the weekend, but picked up some local players to fill the holes, including two former Kanata Pirates in Tony MacDonald and Chris Read. The starting infield for Carp’s Friday evening game consisted of five players who grew up playing together and learning the game from Gil Read.

In the round-robin portion of the tournament, Carp finished 2nd in their pool with wins over the Greely DNTW Eagles and Ed Taylor’s Team and a loss to a combined Fitzroy/Manotick squad playing as Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric.

In the quarter finals, Carp defeated the Kingston Cobras midget squad and then avenged their loss to Fitzroy with a win in the semi-finals. That set up a final against the #6 ranked Team Easton Thunder, who added former national team member Jeff Seed and ace pitcher Cory Costello to their roster for the weekend. In the end, Easton prevailed by a score of 4-1, but were it not for some outstanding defensive plays by Easton’s shortstop Pat O’Connor and outfielders Dave Tubman and Cory Morrison to snuff out some Carp rallies, the score could have been much different.

Offensively, Costello and Seed led the way for Easton, with Costello driving in three of Easton’s four runs. Costello also pitched and earned the win with relief from Dan Bradley. Neil Cooke went the distance in a losing cause for Carp.

#3 TNT take Allentown title in rain-shortened event

Monday, July 7th, 2008

#2 Knights and #9 Keating’s finish tied for second

The NY Knights competed in the rain shortened Allentown , PA 4th of July tournament this past weekend. Due to the bad weather all games were reduced to 5 innings. The Knights were tied with Keatings in the bottom of the second inning 6-6 when the heavy rain came and ended the event.

TNT was declared the winner as the only undefeated team and the Knights and Keatings tied for 2nd place.

The Knights overall season record now stands at 18-4-1. Bill Hillhouse and Darren Rea pitched for the Knights who were without pitchers Dan Duemo and Craig Pidcock.

Double Elim Format
Knights received a first round bye getting the winner of Keatings vs Ormrod

Game 1

Keatings 0 0 0 0 0 x x – 0 3 0
Knights 3 0 0 0 x x x – 3 4 0

WP – Rea 5 IP, 0R, 3 H, 6 K, 2BB
LP – Garrity 4 IP, 3R, 4 H, 5 K, 3BB

The Knights jumped on Keatings starter Greg Garrity for 3 first inning runs lead be Steve Price’s 2 run HR and Chad McConnell’s RBI single.

Game 2

Knights 4 0 0 0 0 x x – 4 5 2
TNT 0 0 0 2 3 x x – 5 3 1

WP – Tracy 5 IP, 4R, 5 H, 4 K, 1BB
LP – Hillhouse 4.2 IP, 5R, 3 H, 8 K, 2BB

The Knights had 4 straight hits off TNT starter Jeremy Tracy capped by a long 3 run HR by John Rozich. Tracy settled in and only allowed 1 hit through the final 4 innings. Knights starter Bill Hillhouse was in command through the first 3 innings and only allowed 3 hits for the game but TNT made those hits count with a long double and 2 Home Runs in the final 2 innings to come from behind for the victory. TNT’s Jay Herr struck the final blow with a walk off HR in the bottom of the 5th.

Game 3

Keatings 3 3 x x x x x – 6 6 0
Knights 6 x x x x x x – 6 4 0

Knights – Rea 1 IP, 6R, 5 H, 1K, 3BB
Hillhouse 1 IP, 0R, 1 H, 2K, 1BB
Keatings – Garrity 1/3 IP, 6R, 4 H, 0 K, 4BB
Hertzler 2/3 IP, 0R, 0 H, 0 K, 1BB

The Knights continued the trend of scoring in the first inning getting 6 runs in the bottom of the first answering the 3 runs Keatings had put up in the top of the inning. Keatings scored 3 more to tie it up off starter Darren Rea before Hillhouse came in to retire Keatings in the second. The Knights were batting in the 2nd inning when the game and tournament was called due to rain.

Although the weather put a damper on the weekend and limited the Knights to 10 offensive innings the team was able to put up 13 first inning runs off the high caliber pitching we faced in the shortened event.

The Knights are off until the final weekend of the MAFTL July 25-27 in Lancaster , PA.

#8 Hoffman Rise grab final US East ToC berth

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

ISC II QUALIFIER IN ALLENTOWN, PA
Friday, July 4, 2008

I am posting this from a friends home in Palmer, PA. The final berth from the Eastern USA region was up for grabs in the Allentown Patriots July 4th Classic Tournament. Their were seven (7) teams entered. Five (5) of the teams have made it their goal to play in the ISC ToC in Appleton, WI.. Three of the teams (NY KNIGHTS, LEBANON TNT & KEATING FITNESS) have already qualified. The tournament was set up as a double elimination tournament with a three game guarantee.

The game at 10:30 AM Friday (July 4) between Hoffman Rise and PA Power was for the berth to the 2008 ISC II ToC in Appleton. There was a big storm Thursday evening and the first game of the Tournament on Thursday evening was postponed. In the first game Friday morning, Lebanon TNT of Lebanon, PA beat ADCO Tool Shed of NY 3-0. In about
the 7th inning of that game it started drizzling.

The game between Hoffman Rise and PA Power started in a steady drizzle. The starting pitchers were Ryan Cummings for the Rise and Ryan Rutt for PA Power. Both teams went scoreless in the first inning. In the top of the second inning, Andy Sabo had a RBI single to drive in Johnny Hurst to give the Rise a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning Matt Daly walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Stevie Moore. Cummings pitched out of jams in both the second and third innings to keep the score at 2-0.

In the top of the fifth for the Rise, Matt Daly singled, Brian Miller walked and then Stevie Moore hit a three run homerun to dead center field to make the score 5-0. Cummings shut down PA Power in the 4th and 5th innings . In the top of the 6th inning the skies opened up and the field was hit with a deluge. With the weather forecast calling for off and on rain for the remainder of the weekend and after some discussion with representatives of the two teams it was decided that if this game can
not be continued, it will be considered a legal game and Hoffman Rise will be awarded the berth to the 2008 ISC II ToC that was available through this tournament. At this time it appears somewhat unlikely that the tournament will be able to continue.
