Snapper Shootout Schedule set

Editor’s Note: While no longer a pure ISC II event, the Snapper Shootout in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario will feature some of the top ISC II talent in Ontario with Shakespeare Falcons, Bridgeport Braves, Elmira Cubs, Ottawa Team Easton Thunder, Port Elgin Blue Devils, Palermo Athletics and Wyevale Tribe along with last year’s second-place team California Lumberkings and perennial contenders CPI from Oswego, NY.

With the 5th Annual Snapper Shootout set to take place on June 6-8, 2008 at Centennial Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, the planning committee is thrilled to announce that Hooligans Sportsbar of Niagara Falls and Molson’s Canada have jumped on board as title sponsors of this years event. 16 teams from across North America will battle it out for $4000 and also of note, returning to the Shootout will be “Razorbax” who will rock the beer garden as games come to an end on the Saturday evening. The schedule is complete with six games on the slate starting up on Friday evening.

New Image wins, Innovative Communications reach final in Vegas tournament

Monfort, WI New Image won the upper division SICFL event in Las Vegas this past weekend.

While this mid-west powerhouse have been perennial NAFA champions (and picked up an ASA “A” title in 2006), there is apparently a possibility that they will attempt to qualify for the ISC II Tournament of Champions this year as the ToC is in their backyard in Appleton. If they do qualify, New Image will certainly be a title contender.

Another contender will be Pleasant Grove, UT Innovative Communications. Formerly known as Castlewood, Innovative Communications are also looking to secure a berth in the ToC and are said to be talking to a western Canadian pitcher to go along with stalwart Steve Black.

2008 Hoffman Rise Roster and Schedule

Perkasie, PA – The Hoffman Rise Fastpitch Team, based out of South Eastern Pennsylvania, are pleased to announce their 2008 roster and schedule. We hope to qualify for the ISC II ToC, being held this year in Appleton/Kimberly, WI. The Rise finished in 5th place in ’07 and are looking for the gold in ’08.

We lost a few players from our ’07 team. Catcher Jim Lawrence and outfielder Ryan Frank will not be with the Rise, as they opted to play for Keatings Fitness for ’08. Lance Bauer will reunite with his former teammates in Lebanon, ’07 ToC Champions South Lebanon TNT. Keith Hammerschmidt will be taking a year off from playing, but will remain with team in an administrative role. Keith has been with the Rise since their inception, and was very instrumental in our off-season acquisitions and fund raising.

New additions for ’08 are Andy Sabo (OF), returning after a year off. Andy’s presence in our line-up will prove valuable ashe was one of our leaders in on-base pct out of the lead-off spot. Joining us again will be Al Panero, who played with us in the ’03 and ’04 ToC. He will provide veteran leadership and knowledge of the game, and should stillbe able to spin a good story. With the closure of the Elkland Fastpitch Team, we are very happy to have added key players. Bryan Miller (2B) and JustinCevette (OF) will add youth and hustle; look for these players to make an impact in our games. Also from the Elkland Team, manager Joe Cevette with teamup with Chip Savini and Joe Roslin to manage the Rise, and this triumvirate should lead the team to many marks in the win column. After a 2-year hiatus, catcher Steve Stires will be back on the playing field. He last played for the QuakerRiversharks, and has been reclassified for the 2008 season. We also have secured the services of Ryan Cummings (P). The Rise team remembers Ryan well, as his Tavistock, ON Merchants eliminated the good guys on their way to the2006 ISC II ToC Championship, where Ryan was named MV Pitcher of the tournament. We look forward to what these additions will bring to the table, on our quest to be the best in ’08.

Lumberkings in All-Star Charity Doubleheader

The Niagara Snappers are pleased to announce that they will be hosting an all star night with the visiting California Lumberkings who are travelling to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the 2008 Snapper Shootout. The Lumberkings, who were finalists at the 2007 ISC II Tournament of Champions have recently merged with the A-1 Taylor Farms club, who were 3rd place finishers at the 2007 ToC. The club features Mike Egerdeen and Dave Drotzmann on the mound as perhaps the toughest 1-2 pitching duo in ISC II along with newcomer Jeff Kawaguchi, one of the top ISC II pitchers in the Vancouver area.

The Niagara Snappers, 3rd place finishers at the 2007 ToC, have accepted a berth to the 2008 ISC World Tournament, will play host to the Lumberkings in the 7pm game, while the Lumberkings will face off with a GHFL all-star team that will be picked by former GHFL president and current ISC Canada East VP and ISC II Commissioner, Blair Setford.

The game is slated to take place at beautiful Lancaster Park in St. Catharines on Thursday June 5th with the action starting at 7pm. A BallPark Radio (www.ballparkradio.com) broadcast of both games is also being discussed.

Proceeds from the gate and several activities at the park including a 50-50 draw, silent auction and souvenir sales will be donated to Melissa Brideau. Melissa is the long time girlfriend of Niagara Falls Fury player Tommy Watkinson who has played ball in the Niagara Falls Men’s League for the past 15 years. Melissa is stricken with a very aggressive from of Multiple Sclerosis. Melissa is 35 years old and has reached a point in her illness where a wheelchair or scooter have become her source of mobility. Melissa is having no luck with North American treatment and is traveling to Venezuela in late April to seek treatment from world renowned specialist Dr. Yepetz utilizing rainforest natural therapy. As one can imagine this is a very costly endeavor but one that needs to be explored now. Dr. Yepetz has successfully reversed the effects of MS in many patients and Melissa feels this type of treatment is one of the few remaining options available for her. If treatments go well, Melissa will in all probability be revisiting Venezuela multiple times.

The next day, California and Niagara will both be taking part in the 6th annual Snapper Shootout which runs from Friday June 6th- Sunday June 8th. Both teams will be competing along with 14 others to claim more than $3500 in prize money. Previous winners of the Shootout include Niagara Snappers (2004, 2005 winners, 2007 co-winner), The Rise (2006 winner) and the Elora Brewers (2007 co-winners). 2008 Ontario Home League Program

ISC Canada East VP Blair Setford is asking for Ontario men’s fastball leagues to confirm their affiliation with the Ontario Home League Program for the 2008 season.

Affiliation enables a league to send a representative to the 2008 Ontario Challenge Cup or the 2008 Eastern Ontario Challenge Cup (details below).

Each tournament will provide the winner with a berth in the 2009 ISC II Tournament of Champions to be held in Quad Cities, IL.

Introducing Ashland, OH STOCKPACK

Ashland STOCKPACK (formerly the Ashland Merchants) have completed a successful off season overhaul that involved much more than just a name change. We have added five seasoned players to an already strong core of players in hopes of making a serious run at the ISC II title in Appleton this August. Leading the new additions is pitcher Tyron McKinney. Many will remember Ty from his exploits as a young gun with the Ashland Coors Light team before he played for multiple season with the Midland Explorers, followed by a season with Ashland MVD Sports. Ty has earned a long list of accomplishments in his comparatively brief history in fastpitch, and following the 2007 season in which he did not play, is very anxious to get back on the field. We also have added Jim Yates to our pitching rotation. Jim has pitched for numerous teams in the Ohio/PA/MI region and brings not only his tremendous talent, but also a vast knowledge and love of the game to our team. In addition, we have been fortunate in adding three top-level position players in Jason Whiteley, Pete Spoerl and Rick Yoder. Jason comes to us following a year at Elkland, and has made stops with the Midland Explorers, Albaugh, Reasnor, and the Orrville, OH Knights among others. Jason will man centerfield for us this year and will undboubtedly be one of our top hitters as well. Pete joins us after spending the last few years with the NY Bombers, and has a long list of top-notch teams that he has played and excelled for. Pete can play anywhere and has consistently shown he has the ability to hit good pitching. Rick has also spent the past few years with the NY Bombers following many successful seasons with the Orrville, OH Knights and Spencer Fastpitch. Rick is one of the best gloves around and will be a great addition to our batting lineup as well.

These five significant additions will join a strong core of players that have battled to 5th place finishes at the TOC in each of the past two years. These players include: Shane Flinner (C), Trevor Urban (SS), Junior Rodriguez (OF), Chad Honaker (2B), Shane Queer (Utility), Nick “Tennessee” McCurry (DH) and Scotty Robinson (IF). Jim Saffle will be increasing his responsibilities this summer as he steps into the Managers role. Jim has been very involved in team operations since the teams inception, and is excited to step into his new role of “running the show.”

While we don’t have our entire schedule completed yet, we know we will be attending the Snapper Shootout in June, the ISC state tourney in Ashland in late June, Frankenmuth, MI in mid-July and the ISC II in August. We are looking to confirm a few more events in the next few weeks and will post our formal schedule as soon as its completed.

ISC and ISC II qualifier in Ashland, OH June 20-22

The Ashland Invitational will be held June 20-22 in Ashland, Ohio and is open to all teams in all regions. One berth in the ISC World Tournament and one berth in the ISC II Tournament of Champions will be awarded. The format will be round robin, with a 4 game guarantee. Entry fee is $300.

For those not familiar with Ashland, it is along Interstate 71 in north central Ohio. For those coming from the northeast, we are about a 6 hour drive from Toronto. For those coming from the west, we are about a 6 hour drive from Chicago. Anyone flying to the tournament would have a 1 hour drive from either the Cleveland or Columbus airport. There are several hotels 10 minutes away from the fields, including Holiday Inn, Amerihost, Days Inn, and Super 8.
