ISC II Daily Log part 3

Monday, August 14th, 2006

By Blair Setford & Jim Flanagan

Rain was the order of the afternoon at the ISC II Tournament of Champions as a three-and-a-half hour rain delay starting at 3 pm forced games to be shifted from Budd Park to Kinsmen Park in Cambridge in order to avoid midnight start times … In golf, Saturday is moving day and at the ToC, Monday is positioning day as several teams positioned themselves for a run at first place in their respective pools and a bye in the first round of the 24-team single knockout playoff bracket … In pool A, Elmira Cubs (2-0) edged Bob Hoffman’s 2-1 … In pool B action, Bridgeport Braves (2-0) beat Fitzroy Harbour (0-3) 6-2 … in pool C, Perkasie Rise (2-0) won two on the day 4-2 over Kingston Cowboys and 8-2 over Black Gold and Harriston (2-0) beat Up-to-Date Painting 2-0 … In pool D Alvinston Indians (2-0) took out Port Elgin Blue Devils 3-1 and Palermo (2-0) edged PA Power 3-2 with Chad Reed on the mound … In pool E, Glence Astros (2-0) rode a three-hit 15-strikeout performance by Shaun Winship to a 6-1 win over Oswego CPI … In pool F, Kitchener Outlaws (2-0) beat Rice Creek Lightning 5-2 … and in pool G, Tavistock Merchants (2-0) have yet to allow a run, defeating South Lebanon TNT 3-0 behind the pitching of Cam Struth and Steve Cook … full standings are available at www.ballparkradio.com … ISC II strikeout record in jeopardy? The ISC II strikeout record for a tournament is 80 in 45 2/3 innings by Keith Potter in 2002. Jonas Mach has 50 strikeouts in 22 innings so far … but a 1-2 record means his Thomson Area Merchants team will need to win their next game against Bridgeport in order to have a shot at a playoff berth to give Mach a shot at the record … tune in to ballparkradio.com Tuesday at 7 pm to see if Mach and Thomson are in the hunt … Strikeout records part two: Regan Manley of the Colorado Rage has 34 strikeouts in 14 innings … Strikeout records part three: Corey Costello – 20 vs Orangeville (perfect game, won 9-0); Jonas Mach – 20 vs Waterdown (8 innings, lost 5-4); Jonas Mach – 19 vs California Lumberkings (lost 2-1); Regan Manley – 19 vs Elmira (lost 6-0).

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Rain is falling at Kitchener as of 3pm Monday. The 3pm games, including the schedule broadcast of the Tavistock vs. South Lebanon, PA game has been delayed.

The current estimate from ISC II staff is (at least) a one-game delay. Game times will be pushed back one slot (e.g. the 3pm games will start when the rain stops (estimated 5pm), 5pm games pushed back to 7pm and so forth.

ISC II Daily Log part 2

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

From Blair Setford & Jim Flanagan at Budd Park
Great competition on the first day of play at the ISC II Tournament of Champions at Budd Park in Kitchener and Kinsmen Park in Cambridge. For sheer drama, you can’t beat an extra innings come-from-behind walk-off home run and that’s exactly what the Waterdown, ON Hammer got from Kyle Davis in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat Thomson, IL Area Merchants 5-4. Other highlights from Day 1: Corey Costello throws a PERFECT GAME striking out 20 as Micksburg, ON Twins beats Orangeville, Resolve Kings 9-0 … Shawn Samson throws a one-hit shutout for Oswego, NY to beat Ashland, OH Merchants 4-0 … Sean Kelly works out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th to preserve a 1-0 win for Marshall, MI Rice Creek Lightning over Elora, ON Wellington Brewers … Eric Steinbeck wins another marathon for Hermann, MO Black Gold, this one an 11-inning affair 5-4 over Millington, MI Up-to-Date Painting … Peter Dobbin 4-4 with a walk in Palermo, ON Athletics 11-3 win over Grande Prairie, AB Pride… Jim Schnarr gets 10 strikeouts to beat California Lumberkings for the host Bridgeport, ON Braves …Regan Manley throwing high 70s mph (mid 120s kph) for Denver, CO Colorado Rage vs Elmira, ON Cubs in last game on Budd #1 … Manley strikes out 19 in loss to Elmira…. last year’s Top Pitcher Casey Halstead throws a 1-hit shutout striking out 13 for Elmira.

Monday’s broadcast schedule:
3 pm Tavistock vs South Lebanon
5 pm CPI vs Glencoe
7 pm Rise vs Black Gold
9 pm Port Elgin vs Alvinston

Daily ISC II log

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

All the teams but one were registered yesterday and I spoke to the team in question after running into them late last night at Peter Hallman Ballyard … they were delayed at the car rental agency in Toronto, then one of their guys got nabbed in a radar trap on the highway and none of them got into town until after 8 pm … they’ll be early at registration … talked to Corey Costello last night – he’s pumped about being here with his own team and will have the ball tonight against Orangeville … the main field at Budd Park is in great shape … there is a big garden on the top of the hill overlooking the park and everything, including the Sportsjuice hookups are ready to go!

On tap for broadcasts today:
12 pm Ashland vs CPI – Blair Setford & Jim Flanagan
2 pm Ottawa vs Toronto – Lance Winn & David Bakker
4 pm Elora vs Rice Creek – Blair & Joe Todd
7 pm Bridgeport vs California – Jim & Blair
9 pm Elmira vs Denver – Jim & Blair

If you’re at the park, look for the Diamond Dirt newsletter … starting tomorrow there will be a daily ISC II column with scores, tidbits and highlights … the park at PHBY was about 80% full for last night’s Kitchener game vs Vandalia – the Twins in their brand new uni’s got up 6-0 in the first and then never got a hit after that, but the outcome was never in doubt … Todd Martin left after 5 without giving up a hit … Don Scott came in and threw gas … gave up one single and had a bunch of K’s … if you haven’t tried it yet, try ISC TV … go with the 200% screen size (right click on the image in your WMP to change the setting … it’s great to see video with audio for fastball altho’ you need a clean broadband connection or you will get buffering.

If you’ve read this far, keep reading throughout the day as I’ll post more observations, highlights etc. as the day goes on.

Email us during the broadcasts at live@ballparkradio.com if you’ve got questions or comments.

Cheers,

Blair
