Stock Pack visit Decatur in ToC tune-up

#4 Ashland Stock Pack will stop in Decatur, IL on the way to Quad Cities to play Saturday/Sunday doubleheaders against the #11 Decatur Pride, who recently won the Illinois state championship. The Pride organization, long a force in ISC play before shuttering the operation in the early 2000s, is expecting over 1,000 fans at Borg-Warner Sports Complex.

Wessel’s Coors Light qualifies for the ISC II World Tourney in the Quad Cities, IA/IL

Wessel’s Coors Light qualifies for the ISC II World Tourney in the Quad Cities, IA/IL

Wessel’s Coors Light will begin the ISC II (International Softball Congress) Tourney of Champions in Rock Island, IL this Tuesday. The tourney runs August 18–22. Coors Light is the first and only local team to attend this event. The 40 teams are from 13 different states and Canada. Canadian teams make up almost half the field including 5 different provinces. The top 10 nationally ranked teams are all from Canada. There are 3 Illinois teams qualified including # 11 Decatur Pride. The tourney takes place at the Campbell Softball Facility in Rock Island, IL. 40 teams total. 8 pools of 5 team pool play leads into a 24 team single elimination to crown the ISC II champion.
Coors Light will play their first game on Tuesday at 2:30 pm against #17 Hoffman Rise from Pennsylvania. August 19 they will play # 13 Ohsweken Redmen from Ontario, Canada That evening they will face # 32 Duncan Outlaws from Indiana. Thursday they complete their pool play against # 1 ranked Waterdown Hammer also from Ontario. Bracket play starts August 21 at 8 am.
Wessel’s enters the tournament with a record of 34-22. In 2009, Coors Light finished 2nd in the ISC Qualifier and the T-Town Memorial Day Tourney. They finished 5th at the Altamont 4th of July. They finished with 5-2 record at state last weekend good for 3rd place.
The team would like to thank their sponsors Wessel’s Grocery and Koerner’s Distributing. They will also compete in the ASA National in Decatur, IL Labor Day weekend.

GOFL Playoffs underway

OTTAWA – The Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoffs (www.GOFL.ca) begin on Tuesday August 11. The regular season consisted of 89 games (one game was rained out and will not be made up as standings are not affected.)

Nine teams from across eastern Ontario and western Quebec participate in the men’s intermediate fastball league and all make the playoffs to compete for the I4C Trophy. Playoffs will be on hiatus during the ISC Tournament of Champions as two GOFL teams will be participating (Quyon COMBAT Flyers and Ottawa Team Easton).

“Play in” game to determine final seed:

Series A: Greely DNTW Eagles (#9) vs. Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric (#8)
The eighth and ninth places teams play a one game sudden death game to determine which squad will advance on to the GOFL quarter-finals. Greely finished the season winless at 0-18-1 while Fitzroy Harbour ended their rebuilding season at 5-14-1. Shannon Borho, Gord Flannery and Ryan Cox are the pitchers for Greely, while Anil Hayne (.455 BA) is their top hitter. Fitzroy Harbour has Bud Hanlon, Steve Cavanagh and 16-year old rookie Andy Barber that can throw. Lead off man Jon Daley (.411 BA) is the Electric’s main threat at the plate.

Series B: Winner of Series A vs. Stittsville 56ers (#1)
The winner of the play-in game gets has a quick turnaround to face GOFL defending champions Stittsville 56ers who took the regular season pennant with a 17-1-2 mark. Dan Bradley (11 wins) and Darren Featherstone (6 wins) throw for Stittsville. Dan Jessiman was the leading hitter for Stittsville with a .444 batting average and Scott Herriot was second in the GOFL with six home runs on the season.

Series C: Orleans Gators (#7) vs Ottawa Team Easton (#2)
Ottawa Team Easton was the only team to defeat the first place 56ers all year and were playoff runners up in 2008. Easton had a 14-4-1 record on the season. Orleans Gators, a junior-aged team, finished with a respectable 7-12-1 mark. Brad Porter had eleven wins pitching for Easton, and Jeff Murphy and Corey Costello also made pitching appearances for Ottawa. Kyle Gourgon (.383 BA) and Dave Tubman (.360 BA) are top hitters for Easton. Chad Hargrove, Jeff Barber and Cory Alkerton throw for Orleans. Joel Langford leads the Gators with a .420 batting average.

C1: Tuesday August 11 at 8:30pm in Stittsville
C2: Thursday August 13 at 8:30pm in Orleans

Series D: Ottawa Blitz (#6) vs Quyon COMBAT Flyers (#3)
Quyon, the only Quebec-based entry in the GOFL, finished the year with a 11-7-2 record, while the much-improved Ottawa Blitz ended at 8-11-1. The Flyers have Matt Greer and Drew Hathway on the slab. Top hitters for the COMBAT sponsored team are Greer with a league leading seven homers on the season and Nick Armitage who led the league with 19 RBIs. Jamie Blakely and Derick Bulley are the main chuckers for the Blitzos. Will Mood is the offensive leader for the Blitz with a .426 batting average.

D2: Thursday August 13 at 8:00pm in Quyon

Series E: Carp I4C Victory (#5) vs Manotick Lomor Printers (#4)
The veteran Manotick team was in first place for much of the early part of the GOFL season but tailed off later in the campaign to finish fourth with a record of 10-7-3. Carp ended the year at 9-7-4. Manotick has Trevor Lahey and Paul Ceppi to throw. Calvin Medynski had a big year at the plate, leading the league amongst regular players with a .533 batting average. Carp counters with Neil Cooke, Trevor Wood and Billy Gerber as pitchers. Kevin McGuire hit .339 and had 14 RBIs for I4C.

Hammer head up field in Niagara Falls

Editor’s Note: The top-ranked Waterdown Hammer, fresh off winning the Ontario championship, will head to Niagara Falls for a last-minute tune-up prior to the 2009 ToC.

The 18-team field is set for the annual Niagara Falls Men’s League tournament August 7-9 Ker Park. Below are the 18 teams participating and the tournament again is full.

On site concessions, beer gardens, and sporting goods will be available and as usual we can expect many fans to come out.

Waterdown Hammer win Ontario championship

Waterdown Hammer won the OASA Intermediate Eliminations this past weekend, defeating Elmira Expos in the championship game. The win qualifies the Hammer for the 2010 ISC II Tournament of Champions in Midland, MI, pending their finish in the 2009 ToC.

Waterdown & Kitchener still undefeated at OASA elims

Waterdown Hammer and Kitchener Outlaws will meet in the undefeated game of the OASA Intermediate Eliminations tournament on Sunday in Waterloo.

Still alive in the loser`s bracket are Bridgeport Braves and KW Cubs amongst others.
