Lumberkings Top A-1/Taylor Farms in the Battle for California

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Lumberkings’ Darren (Strang) Prevails Over A-1/Taylor Farms’ Darren (Zack)

ISC II # 4 ranked California Lumberkings of Bakersfield, CA squared off with in-state ISC II rival, # 25 A-1/Taylor Farms, of Salinas, CA in a 4:30pm pool play game Saturday at the Rose Cup tournament in Portland, OR. The Lumberkings came away with the victory, with pitcher Darren Strang tossing a 2-0 shutout for the win over a Darren Zack-led A-1 Taylor Farms. It was a well pitched game on both sides.

The Lumberkings played in their first ISC II T of C last summer, finishing in the top 12. A-1/Taylor Farms is new to the scene, but is expected to be at the 2007 T of C as well. The Lumberkings qualified at the Red Rock Tournament in St. George, Utah, in May. A-1/Taylor Farms did well in that one, but had ISC World pitcher Doug Sleep on the mound, so were not eligible for ISC II qualification. Sleep is with A-1/Taylor Farms at the Rose Cup tournament as well, and the team raised its profile decidely with the addition of the legendary pitcher, Darren Zack. Neither Sleep nor Zack is eligible to pitch for them at the 2007 T of C.

In single elimination bracket play at the Rose Cup on Sunday, the Lumberkings pulled (another) tough draw, the ISC World # 7 ranked So Cal Bombers. The Lumberkings finished the day 2-1, including a pair of shutouts by Darren Strang. They fell to ISC World # 3 ranked Broken Bow, 4-1, with Mike Egerdeen looking impressive in the loss.

A-1/Taylor Farms was also 2-1, and will face host, # 13 ranked Portland DeMarini.

Waterloo Region the place to be for fastball

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

From the KW Record

CHRISTINE RIVET
KITCHENER (Jun 13, 2007)

In case you haven’t already heard, Waterloo Region is the centre of the fastball universe.

This, from promoter Duncan Matheson who — along with his volunteer army of fastball foot soldiers — will bring the men’s world club team championships to Kitchener for the second straight year.

“You got so many people around here that are fastball nuts. They put so much into the game because they love the game,” Matheson said at yesterday’s news conference which kicked off a season that will conclude with the International Softball Congress world tournament in Kitchener from Aug. 10-18.

For Halifax native Mark Smith, the head coach of the Canadian senior men’s fastball team, this area’s fastball talent, proximity to Toronto’s airport, world-class facilities and hospitality are hard to beat.

“All fastball roads lead you here,” said Smith, in town with the national team this week for a test series against the three-time defending world champs from New Zealand.

The Kiwis warmed up for that series last night in Tavistock, handing the Kitchener Hallman Twins a 13-3 defeat in the opening game of a doubleheader.

This summer, the ISC worlds, the granddaddy of senior men’s club team tournaments, will be held at Kitchener’s Peter Hallman Ball Yard for the third time in six years.

The ISCs also include an intermediate men’s competition (the Tournament of Champions) to be played in Kitchener and Cambridge, a youth tournament and a skills clinic.

Waterloo Region and area boasts a season piled high with premier fastball events, organizers said, including the recently-completed Legends of Fastball Classic in Woodstock.

New Zealand national team infielder Jarrad Martin knows first-hand how much this sport matters to local fans.

While wearing the uniform of the two-time ISC champion County Materials of Marathon, Wis., last summer, he felt the wrath of local spectators at the Hallman Ball Yards.

“Last year, we (County) weren’t on the best side of the fans at a lot of times. We had to deal with the adversity and the hostile crowds. But the sport has a great following here,” said Martin, 34, an electrician from New Plymouth, New Zealand

Named the 2006 ISCs most valuable player, Martin will make a return trip to Kitchener in August, for the 2007 ISC worlds, as a member of the Broken Bow Gremlins of Albany, N.Y.

Smith, who has repeatedly brought Team Canada to Kitchener for training camps, will also guide Nova Scotia’s under-19 girls squad to Kitchener-Waterloo next month to train.

ISC world tourney organizers said that more than 50,000 fans are expected to watch the nine-day tournaments in Kitchener and Cambridge. About $7 million will be injected into the local economy, they said.

Some 600 volunteers will devote 14,000 hours to hosting the ISC worlds and Tournament of Champions.

“It’s fastball fever. People are going crazy about the game,” said Matheson, the 2007 ISC tourney’s chair.

At last year’s ISC worlds, 47,000 fans attended. The tourney netted a profit of $82,000, shared with seven local non-profit groups.

Promo Video for 2007 ISC WT & ISC II ToC

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Courtesy Al’s Fastball

Thought we should share this little promo video produced by the Kitchener ISC Host Committee. The promo was produced to be played on the jumbotron at our local Ranger’s Junior Hockey games this past winter. Gives a good sense of the action that you can expect to see this August in Kitchener at the ISC World Fastball Tournament. Have a look and pass the link around. Looking forward to seeing everybody at the Ballyard in August.

I got a sneak peak at this a couple of weeks back. The producers have done a great job putting this together. I hope everyone that runs a website will provide a link to it to help promote the game.

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

The California Lumberkings will be back at the ISC II Tournament of Champions for the second straight year, having won the ISC II berth from the Red Rock Tournament this past weekend in St. George, Utah. The Lumberkings were the top finishing ISC II team in the tournament, including a win over the Consolation Bracket champions, Castlewood II, from Utah, and took ISC World #15 ranked Portland De Marini to extra innings, before dropping a tough one run game.

The Lumberkings were the first team from California to compete in the ISC II Tournament of Champions, and did well, qualifying for the playoff round, and winning their first playoff game, before falling in extra innings to a then-unbeaten Kitchener team.

The Lumberkings have improved their roster for 2007, adding pitcher Mike Egerdeen, who pitched well in last year’s ISC II for JRW of Yakima Washington, surrendering but one earned run in the tournament, as well as young Anthony Martinez, who pitched his 23-and-under team to the National title last summer. Hard throwing right hander Darren Strang, from British Columbia will be back with the Lumberkings for his second season.
