TNT ranked No. 1 as new season begins

TNT will be hosting the first Mid-Atlantic Fastpitch Travel League tournament this weekend, a tournament that marks TNT’s first game of the season. The tournament will also mark the first game for TNT as the top-ranked team in the International Softball Congress II rankings.

“We were hoping to be ranked No. 1,” said Irv Lutz, TNT’s general manager, “because there’s a lot of good teams out there. Everyone’s been talking about how we’re the team to beat. We’re gonna have a bull’s-eye on our back.”

The rankings were released last week.

For TNT, this week marks the start of the journey Lutz, and the rest of the team, hope will once again end with a championship. After finishing fourth two years ago, last summer TNT became the first team from the United States to win the prestigious international tournament, posting a 4-2 victory over the California Lumberkings, a team from Bakersfield, in the championship game in Kitchener, Ontario. That victory capped an 8-0 run through the tournament by TNT while wrapping up a 51-5 season that included a sweep of the three MAFTL tournament titles.

TNT second baseman Paul Blatt jumps into the arms of pitcher Jeremy Tracy while fellow infielders Jay Herr (23) and Jason McClune rush in to join the celebration following the final out of last summer's ISC II championship game.

Completing another MAFTL sweep — in addition to this weekend’s tournament at Prescott and Stoever’s Dam fields, the league will also hold tournaments in Lancaster County in June and July — won’t be easy. TNT might be No. 1 heading into the tournament, but four other teams in the 10-team field are ranked in the ISC II top 20, including third-ranked Hoffman Rise, fifth-ranked Keating Fitness, the sixth-ranked NY Knights, and 20th-ranked PA Power.

“It’s not going to be easy,” said Lutz. “We’re anxious to get going, and we’re looking to repeat, but it’s going to be tough. There are a lot of good teams.”

This week’s MAFTL tournament will begin Friday with two games at Prescott. KCC, a team from Maryland, will play Cornerstone Excavating, a Pennsylvania team, at 7 p.m., and PA Power will play Cornerstone at 9.

TNT's Jay Herr homers in last summer's ISC II tournament in Kitchener, Ontario. Herr was named the tournament's MVP in helping to lead TNT to the championship.

Saturday will feature a full schedule of games at Prescott and at both Stoever’s Dam fields. TNT opens play at Prescott at 9 a.m., then plays again at 11 before finishing with a game at 3 p.m. The top eight teams from preliminary round play will be seeded for the start of the single-elimination playoffs, which begin at 7 p.m. Saturday. The semifinals will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by the championship game at noon at Prescott.

The field for the tournament includes TNT, PA Power, Hoffman Rise, Keating Fitness, Aqua and Cornerstone Excavating, all from Pennsylvania; NY Knights and ADCO Tool Shed from New York; KCC from Maryland; and Peninsula Merchants from Virginia.

Still, Lutz said, TNT is ready.

“We’ve got a good bunch of guys,” said Lutz. “Everyone’s looking forward to this year.”

TNT returns pitcher Jeremy Tracy, voted the most valuable pitcher in the ISC II tournament last summer, and infielder Jay Herr, the ISC II tournament MVP who set or tied four tournament records. TNT also added outfielder Rob Loglisci, who was named to the ISC II All-Tournament team while playing with PA Power, and infielder Lance Bower from Hoffman Rise. Lee Lutz will once again serve as the field manager for the team.

Memphis, TN Posse qualify for ToC

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Memphis, TN Posse qualified for the 2008 ISC II Tournament of Champions, taking the berth at the War Eagle Classic held April 19-20 in Auburn, AL.

The Posse finished in the top 10 in 2005 in their ISC II debut, finishing with a 3-3 record. They knocked off the Cobourg, ON Stingers in a first-round playoff matchup before falling to the Ottawa, ON Team Easton Thunder.

In 2006, the Posse won the ASA “B” National Championship and they followed that up with a top 10 finish at the ASA “A” Nationals last year.

Leading the Posse will be right-hander Tim Tummins who finished with a 2-1 record at the 2007 ToC when he was on loan to Wilkes-Barre, PA Keating’s Fitness.

2008 Hoffman Rise Roster and Schedule

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Perkasie, PA – The Hoffman Rise Fastpitch Team, based out of South Eastern Pennsylvania, are pleased to announce their 2008 roster and schedule. We hope to qualify for the ISC II ToC, being held this year in Appleton/Kimberly, WI. The Rise finished in 5th place in ’07 and are looking for the gold in ’08.

We lost a few players from our ’07 team. Catcher Jim Lawrence and outfielder Ryan Frank will not be with the Rise, as they opted to play for Keatings Fitness for ’08. Lance Bauer will reunite with his former teammates in Lebanon, ’07 ToC Champions South Lebanon TNT. Keith Hammerschmidt will be taking a year off from playing, but will remain with team in an administrative role. Keith has been with the Rise since their inception, and was very instrumental in our off-season acquisitions and fund raising.

New additions for ’08 are Andy Sabo (OF), returning after a year off. Andy’s presence in our line-up will prove valuable ashe was one of our leaders in on-base pct out of the lead-off spot. Joining us again will be Al Panero, who played with us in the ’03 and ’04 ToC. He will provide veteran leadership and knowledge of the game, and should stillbe able to spin a good story. With the closure of the Elkland Fastpitch Team, we are very happy to have added key players. Bryan Miller (2B) and JustinCevette (OF) will add youth and hustle; look for these players to make an impact in our games. Also from the Elkland Team, manager Joe Cevette with teamup with Chip Savini and Joe Roslin to manage the Rise, and this triumvirate should lead the team to many marks in the win column. After a 2-year hiatus, catcher Steve Stires will be back on the playing field. He last played for the QuakerRiversharks, and has been reclassified for the 2008 season. We also have secured the services of Ryan Cummings (P). The Rise team remembers Ryan well, as his Tavistock, ON Merchants eliminated the good guys on their way to the2006 ISC II ToC Championship, where Ryan was named MV Pitcher of the tournament. We look forward to what these additions will bring to the table, on our quest to be the best in ’08.

Waterdown Hammer Bolsters Roster for 2008

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Information courtesy of Dave Birnie, Ontario, Canada

Waterdown, Ontario

The Waterdown Hammer ( ISC II ) are pleased to announce 2 significant roster additions for 2008. Today’s signings include pitcher, Wayne Wells who has officially committed for the 2008 tournament season and catcher Troy Gilmour for selected tournaments.
Wayne Wells at 2005 Red Rock tournament
Wayne Wells, the hard throwing veteran right hander has an impressive resume and joins the Hammer unexpectedly. Wayne or “Wellsy” as he’s most commonly referred to is a resident of Peterborough Ontario and works as a Senior Health and Safety Consultant with Ontario Power Generation. This year, at the age of 47 Wellsy was reclassified for ISC II competition. Wellsy has participated in previous ISC World Tournaments with Peterborough Murphy Windmillers, Houston Aces and Happy Hollow Barons ( Wisconsin ) to name a few. Wellsy is a fierce competitor that brings a lot to the table.

Troy Gilmour will add a solid bat into the middle of the Hammer batting order. Gilly is one of those hitters that all coaches love to have, seems like he’s going to get a hit every single at bat and is a very tough out. Gilly and Wellsy have great chemistry together, Gilly has been Wellsy’s catcher for several years now and they will form a solid battery for the Hammer. Gilly is the Parks Superintendent for the Community and Leisure Services Dept. for the City of Quinte West. Gilly has previous ISC World Tournament experience with Peterborough, Napanee Express and the Houston Aces.

There are some key factors when evaluating players such as, longevity, grit, talent and can they win ? We think Wellsy and Gilly more then meet these expectations. Wellsy and Gilly will fit in nicely with their new teammates, actually Wellsy and Gilly aren’t really new to the team, they’ll be playing with some of their friends as several of the current Hammer players and coaching staff members are also former teammates.

The Hammer Coaching Staff of Pete Chambers, Kyle Davis, Tim Coe and Dave Birnie are thrilled to officially welcome Wayne Wells and Troy Gilmour to the Waterdown Hammer, welcome aboard !

Regards,
Dave Birnie

Kawaguchi to Pitch for LumberKings

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Bakersfield Ca:

The California LumberKings announced today that they have signed pitcher Jeff Kawaguchi for the upcoming season. Looking to replace injured pitcher Darren Strang, the LumberKings signed Kawaguchi who is from Vancouver, B.C.

Along with assuming the pitching duties vacated by Strang, Kawagucci will add a strong bat to an already deep lineup. In addition to pitching, he can also play in the field at 1st base and the outfield adding even more versatility to the Kings roster.

Jeff has been one of the top pitchers and hitters in the Premier league of Vancouver and is a former member of the Vancouver Grey Sox. With the addition of Kawagucci and the merge with Taylor Farms, the LumberKings are very optimistic about the upcoming season and are very excited to hit the field. They will open the season in early April in Taft, Ca. and continue their goal of improving on their second place finish at the 2007 ToC.

De Kalb Hogs Take Aim At The Deuce

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Via

De Kalb, Il.

The De Kalb Hustlehogs will attempt to qualify for the ISC II Tournament of Champions in Appleton, Wisconsin. The tournament takes place August 10-13.

Referred to by many as “The Deuce,” the Hogs will play in two ISC II qualifying events in May. The club will be hosting a qualifier the weekend of May 9-11 before playing in the Rockford Dick Tracy Tournament the following weekend of May 17-18.

The Hog organization’s mission is to introduce the game of fastpitch to new players. Every fall, the Hogs organize a Development League and receive a grant from the International Softball Congress to help with expenses.

“The ISC has been very supportive in our organization’s efforts to expose the game of fastball to men in the Northern Illinois area,” Hog General Manager Tom Crouch said, “The Hogs have never played in an ISC event and we feel it is time to give back to the fastball organization that has helped us so much with our efforts to improve the game. Therefore, we have decided to try and qualify for the ISC II. The players and coaches are very excited about the opportunity.” Crouch (Circle Tap) and Mike Drew (Aurora D&M) who play with the team in league games will not be able to participate in the ISC II as both players will be playing with their respective ISC teams in the World Tournament.

The Hogs will have to add a player or two to fill the void of Crouch and Drew and will release a roster in the next month.
