Lumberking’s Anthony Martinez Leads Team to 23&U Nat’l Title

Monday, August 7th, 2006

From the So Cal ASA website:

2006 23 & UNDER NATIONAL CHAMPIONS – YOUNG BUCKS

The Young Bucks of Southern California finished the tournament 4 – 0 and ended two of the games via the run rule. Led by Clyde Bennett and Warren “Pinky” Allsup, this group of young men scored 33 runs while allowing only 4 runs, one earned. This was the second year that the Young Bucks appeared at the 23 & Under Nationals and have earned trips to the Championship game both years. In last year’s contest the Young Bucks defeated LeMay of Minnesota in the Championship game but had to forfeit the “If” game due to their flight back home.

This year Clyde made sure that the team could play the entire tournament as they have flights on the red eye Sunday night so that they would have no problem playing for the title. In this year’s Championship game, the Young Bucks had a rematch against LeMay who worked their way through the loser’s bracket, winning six games in a row. With Anthony Martinez in the circle, the Young Bucks took only the one game to prove that they were the National Champions and defeated LeMay by a score of 3 – 1. Anthony was on his game in the Championship as he pitched a no-hitter, allowing only one run on a walk and passed ball.

The Young Bucks were honored after the tournament as they received their Championship medallions and eight members of the team earned first and second team All-American Honors:

First Annual PROforma ALL-STAR Challenge Cup

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Blair Setford to Broadcast Live at 9pm Thursday Night

Kitchener, Ontario – August 4, 2006 – The Golden Horseshoe Fastball League and the South Perth Men’s Fastball League are pleased to announce the creation of a brand new event taking place at the site of the 2006 ISC World Fastball Tournament.

The PROforma ALL-STAR Challenge Cup, sponsored by local promotional products distributor PROforma Promotions, will be held on Thursday, August 10th at 9:00 PM at the Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener. The event will pair all-star teams from the GHFL & SPMFL in a tournament kick-off challenge match.

“I am very excited to sponsor this new event,” states Ken Doucet, owner of PROforma Promotions, the official merchandise supplier of the 2006 Schneiders ISC World Men’s Fastball Tournament. PROforma also supplied the merchandise for the 2002 Schneiders ISC World Men’s Fastball Tournament.

“We’re doing everything we can to try to re-fire interest in men’s fastball in Ontario and events like the PROforma All-Star Challenge are a great way to build some friendly rivalries between leagues,” said GHFL President Blair Setford. “South Perth is widely recognized as one of the top leagues around, but we think that we’re going to surprise a lot of people with how good the GHFL team will be.”

“South Perth teams have won the past three ISC II Championships and we’ve got a lot of great players, but we’re looking forward to the challenge,” said South Perth president George Nahrgang.

“We’re thrilled that PROforma has stepped up to be the title sponsor and I expect that competition for the PROforma All-Star Cup is going to be fierce every year,” said Setford.

Ashland, OH Merchants and Thomson, IL Area Merchants competed in the ASA Major Championship this past weekend in South Bend, IN. Both teams will be in the ISC II ToC in Kitchener later this month.

Thomson finished 2-3, losing to eventual winner Circle Tap in their first game.
Circle Tap 3 Thomson 1
Thomson 10, Duncan Outlaws, Elkhart, IN 5
Thomson 1 Ashland Merchants 0

One run was all the Thomson, IL Area Merchants needed to even their record in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Saturday at 1-1.It was the second loss in as many games for the Merchants who lost their opener to Circle Tap 3-1. The lone run came in the first inning when Kraig Sommers doubled and scored one out later on a single by Casey Eden. Ashland never got a runner past second base against winning pitcher Jonas Mach. Losing pitcher was Scott Hershey who fanned five batters.

Plangger’s Furniture 6 Thomson 5

After allowing five runs in the first inning, Doug Sleep closed the door on the Thomson Area, IL Merchants as Plangger’s Furniture of Benton Harbor, MI evened its record at 1-1 in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Friday. Sleep allowed eight hits and only three after the first inning when the losers tallied five times on an RBI single by Scott Glazier, and a pair of two-run homers by Bruce Bielema and Marquis Cody. Cody’s homer was the first inside-the-park homer of the tournament. Plangger’s fought back and scored once in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Doc Brown and added two runs in the second and three in the third inning against losing pitcher Brad Cheyne, who allowed 10 hits. Shortstop Brent Mallernee had a two-run double in the second inning, Gary Cooper had a two-run double and Steve Hamming an RBI single in the third inning for Plangger’s.

Ashland finished 0-3, having the misfortune to draw defending champion and eventual silver medallist Florida Fastpitch in their first game.
Florida Fastpitch 9 Ashland 2

ISC II ToC teams place 2nd, 4th & 5th at OASA “Intermediate” elims

Monday, August 7th, 2006

editor’s note: As we noted earlier, the OASA eliminations this year featured only a two-team senior division as St. Thomas & Jarvis were the only two teams prepared to go to Prince George, BC for the Senior Canadians, so the intermediate division was stacked with senior/ISC pitchers, including Don Scott, Todd Martin, Wayne Wells, Jason Smith and others. Congratulations to Port Elgin Blue Devils on their silver medal. Finishing fourth was the bulk of the Toronto Champion Indians (playing as East York) and fifth was the defending ISC II Champion Elmira Cubs.

OASA “Intermediate” Eliminations Scores

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

editor’s note: Several teams that will be in the 2006 ISC II ToC are in action this weekend at the OASA “Intermediate” Eliminations. However, because only two Ontario teams are competing in the Senior eliminations, several senior/ISC pitchers are playing in the intermediate division this year, including 2/3 of the Kitchener Twins staff: Todd Martin & Don Scott. Should be an interesting weekend with $2000 going to the winner. No one is actually expected to bother with the Eastern Canadians should they win. The defending champions are Palermo Athletics. Teams from the ISC II ToC are in bold.

Kitchener is Ready!

Friday, August 4th, 2006

From Al’s Fastball:

[KITCHENER, ON] -The activity and storms around the ball parks these days are impressive. Copious, rainfall has the turf in the best condition itÂ’s been in for a long time and it was good before. Parking lots have been graded, grass cut, the lighting has been improved, and the enhanced dugouts are getting great reviews. The permanent bleachers behind home plate are now in place and look great. Many sponsors have stepped forward and signs, advertising and talk among players, fans are helping to build excitement. The present heat wave in Ontario is set to break and the tournament forecast is sunshine and low 70Â’s so the weather and facilities are ready and in excellent shape. (more…)
