Braves good hosts

July 8th, 2009

Bridgeport Braves played “good” host to the New Zealand Black Sox last night at Kitchener’s Woodside Park, in a 16-3 Black Sox win.

The Braves Todd Winkworth started off the game on the mound and proceeded to strike out their lead off hitter Nathan Nukunnuku, and enticed left fielder Gareth Cooke to pop out to third base. The Black Sox then turned up the heat and proceeded to score 8 consecutive runs in the 1st inning lead by Travis Wilson & Thomas Makea Home Runs (or as John Thompson liked to announce them as *Automatics* ).

The Braves answered back in the bottom of the 1st inning with 1 run of their own, with a walk to Terry Eaton, and two back to back singles by Ross Herald and Jamie Boyd. The Second inning was much tamer with only NZ’s Travis Wilson, hitting his Second Home Run of the game.

The Braves “owned” the Black Sox in the 3rd inning out scoring them 2-0, thanks to a two run shot by Braves Catcher Ross Herald, but that was all the Braves could muster the rest of the way against New Zealand’s up and coming 19-year old pitcher Thomas Enoka.

The Black Sox continued their torrid hitting scoring 3 more in the fourth on home runs by Catcher Patrick Shannon and Rhys Casley, and wrapped things up in the 5th with 5 more runs lead by Gareth Cooke inning lead off HR.

Travis Wilson, lead the Black Sox attack with two Home Runs and two singles, Thomas Enoka got the win giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and registered 8 strike outs. While Bridgeport’s Todd Winkworth took the loss giving up 8 runs on 10 hits, and 1 strike out. Mark Van Vliet came on in relief and gave up 8 runs on 11 hits.

It was an honour and pleasure to play against the 3 time Defending World ISF Champion New Zealand Black Sox, and wish them a safe trip to Saskatoon to defend their title July 17-26th

The Braves wish to thank Larry Lynch for the invitation to play the Black Sox, along with Kitchener Fastball Promotions and all the Volunteers for putting on a great night of “FASTBALL”

A chance to help Ken Vierling

July 7th, 2009

From Lori Sorenson, Ken’s sister-in-law:

Stand Up for Ken

He Needs YOUR Help!

Here is a brief update on our “Comic Dude”. Ken is now back in Minnesota at St. Mary’s in Rochester for rehab. It is hard for Ken as he is really not able to do a lot for himself yet. They are teaching him to try and feed himself and brush his teeth. He is riding around in a motorized chair (he could use a few driving lessons though!). After rehab Ken will be going to assisted living. Ken is also an avid bowler, umpire and loves to play poker. Those of us who know Ken know of his sense of humor and spirit and love for life. He loves to sing and make people laugh.

Ken is now paralyzed from the chest down. He does have some sensation in his legs but the sensations move around. He can move his arms but has no use of his hands. The prognosis is that Ken’s chances of ever walking again are not great. But Ken is a “battler” and along with some help and support from us, he will fight this battle.

Obviously, Ken will face great financial issues in the future. Aside from astronomical hospital bills, down the road, there will be income issues for a long time, as employment potential will certainly be very questionable.
This tragic event has certainly changed Ken’s life in many ways. Therefore, we are planning a couple different fundraisers at this time to help Ken and his family. The first one is Saturday August 29th at the Farmington American Legion. This event will include a Silent Auction, Beer Bash and Sandwiches and music by Chopper. The second event will be Saturday Sept 12th at the Owatonna Knights of Columbus. This will include a Spaghetti Dinner, Silent Auction and Bake Sale.

Here’s how you can help us affect the future of Ken. Please consider contributing a gift basket or other auction items to one or both of the silent auctions. Some ideas that have sold well at past auctions include:

* Gardening, Movie Night, Arts & Crafts, Scrapbooking
* Coffee Time, Spa and Relaxation, Wine and Cheese, Sports Basket
* Breakfast Basket, Italian, Birthday Party, Book Basket, Afghans, vacations/trips
* Pet Basket, Baby, Night on the Town, School Basket, Game Night, Car Care Basket

The baskets will be used to raise money for the sole purpose and benefit of Ken. Your help and generosity can make these benefits a success and make a significant impact on this very special man that has put a smile on so many faces throughout the country and beyond. Please help give Ken an opportunity to meet the many challenges facing him today and in the years ahead. Your donation can truly make a difference in the life of this man who has made such a difference in so many lives. We sincerely thank you for you consideration.

Donations can be sent to:

Dave Vierling
14725 Portland Ave S #311
Burnsville, MN 55306

We will also be available to pick-up donations. Please call 952-236-7835 or email vierlingd@yahoo.com with any questions or to schedule a pick-up.

Hope to see you all at one or both of the benefits.
Thank you for your consideration on making these events a success for Ken!

God Bless You All,
Dave & Lori

Canadians advance to next level
By PAUL COSTANZO
Times Herald • July 6, 2009

Joe Triest and the Alvinston (Ontario) Indians became pretty comfortable in Port Huron.

In three days, the Indians won six games, including a 4-3 victory against the Ohsweken (Ontario) Redmen on Sunday in the finals of the Quay Street Brewing Co. Blue Water Invitational at Pine Grove Park.

“This was great,” said Triest, who had three hits in the finals. “Anytime we can come to a different country and get treated like this, it’s great.”

With the win, the Indians advance to the International Softball Congress II Tournament as champions, a tournament they won in 2002.

The team failed to qualify for the tournament last year, the first time since they won that had happened.

“It will be fun,” Triest said. “I went last year with another team, but you want to go with your own team.”

Alvinston defeated Alexander’s Stallions 1-0 in the semifinals. Brad Young picked up the shutout in the game, and also picked up the win in the championship game.

He held the Redmen’s bats in check throughout the final, especially after the second inning. Ohsweken jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Robert Bomberry in the first inning. Geoff Bomberry added a home run in the second, which tied the game at 2.

Young allowed five hits the rest of the way and didn’t walk a batter.

One of those hits was a triple by Robert Bomberry, who was driven on a Curtis Cornelius single.

That made the score 4-3 in favor of the Indians, who put together their runs in the second and fifth innings.

Triest drove in two runs with an RBI single in the second. He scored on a passed ball in the fifth, before Jason Hope drove in what would be the winning run later in the inning.

The fifth came with some drama, however, as Triest and Steve Donald had initially scored on a single by Scott Smith. After the umpires discussed the call, however, Smith’s hit was ruled a foul ball, sending the runners back to the bases and drawing the ire of Indians Coach Paul McCart. Both runners eventually would score, however.

Also in that inning, Redmen pitcher Darren Zack was injured and had to leave the game. He was responsible for the two runs that scored.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Redmen had their own close play down the third-base line not go in their favor. A line drive was headed foul but the Indians third baseman attempted to make a play on it. The play was immediately ruled foul, but Redmen Coach Darrell Anderson felt it was played in fair territory. Had it been ruled fair, it would have scored the winning run. The Redmen batter eventually flied out to centerfield to end the game.

“That was a tough one to swallow,” Anderson said. “The umpires were a little shaky. You can’t blame the umpires, but that was a tough one to swallow.”

The Redmen defeated Port Huron Lanes Hurricanes in the semifinals, 4-3.

Thomas Hill had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Redmen the lead.

In the top half of the inning, Ryan Enright had tied the game with a solo home run for the Hurricanes.

Luke Smith also had a home run in the game for the Hurricanes, while Chris Heinlein had an RBI double to drive in Greg Fowler, who had tripled.

The tournament’s final day drew a good crowd, filling practically all of the bleachers at Pine Grove Park, with several fans watching behind the outfield fence.

“It was amazing,” McCart said. “It was great weather, great hospitality and great fans.

“If I have my way, we’ll be here again.”

Alvinston takes Port Huron qualifier over Ohsweken

July 5th, 2009

Courtesy Paul McCart, Alvinston Indians

On Sat morning the Alvinston Indians defeated Secorys 5-0 with Ryan Swift throwing a 3 hitter with 2 rbis ,Joe Triest had 2 hits as well. In game 2 the Indians defeated the Hurricanes 8-0 in 5 innings with John Ferguson getting the 5 hit shutout with Jason Hope and Ryan Swift each hitting 3-run HRS .The Indians will now play Oshweken Redmen at 7:30 Sat evening .

In Port Huron, in the Bluewater Invitational, the 7:30 pm matchup pitted the Ohsweken Redmen (2-1) against the Alvinston Indians (3-0).

Darren Zack took the mound for Ohsweken, while Ryan Swift toed the rubber for the Indians. It remained a pitcher’s duo, with Ryan Swift escaping a scare in the bottom of the second inning, when Ohsweken had runners on first and second with no one out, but failed to score in the inning.

Alvinston finally touched up Zack for their first hit in the third inning, but they failed to score. However, in the fourth inning, Chris Drew reached second base via a slap hit, and scored on an RBI single by Indians catcher Scott Smith. The next batter for Alvinston, Ryan Swift, then promptly made it 2-0 when he tripled into the gap to score Smith for the game’s second run.

Alvinston would go on to play sound defence en route to a 2-0 win over Ohsweken. Ryan Swift was the winning pitcher for Alvinston, allowing 4 hits, 0 earned runs, and adding 7 strikeouts for the shutout victory. Darren Zack allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, and struckout 11 for Ohsweken, but suffered the loss. Curtis Cornelius was 3/3 for Ohsweken in the game.

Alvinston will now face the Alexander Stallions in the semi-finals at 9:00am Sunday morning. Ohsweken plays the Port Huron Secory’s at 11:00am in the other semi-final.

This morning, the 9:00am semi-final matchup had the Alexander’s Stallions square off with the Alvinston Indians.

In the opening inning, Joe Triest singled, was sacrificed to second by Steve Donald, and scored on an RBI two-out single by Scott Smith. In the Stallions half of the first inning, Brian Fanion led off with a triple, but was stranded, as Brad Young shut the door on the mound for Alvinston.

Young went the rest of the game for Alvinston allowing only 2 more hits along the way, while striking out 10 to earn the shutout victory, 1-0. Dewey Dyck was the hard luck losing pitcher for the Stallions, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 10.

At 1:00pm on Sunday, the Bluewater Invitational Fastpitch Tournament fans were treated to a great championship game between the Alvinston Indians and Ohsweken Redmen. The game featured Ohsweken’s Darren Zack, while Brad Young took the mound for Alvinston.

Ohsweken jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Robert Bomberry singled to score Luke Hopkins for the game’s first run. However, in the Alvinston half of the second inning, they managed to count 2 runs. With one out, Ryan Chapman and Scott D. Smith both singled for Alvinston, and then Rob Burns followed with a well placed bunt single to drive in the first run. Then with two out Joe Triest gave the Indians the lead, scoring Scott D. Smith for the go ahead run. But, in the home half of the second inning, Ohsweken’s Geoff Bomberry squared matters hitting a solo blast off of Young to tie the contest at 2’s.

The game remained 2-2 until the top of the fifth inning, when Joe Triest led off with a double for Alvinston, advanced to third when Steve Donald reached base via an error, and then Triest scored on a Darren Zack wild pitch. Zack landed funny with his landing foot, and tweaked his knee and was forced to exit the game, and Lee Hopkins took the mound as his replacement. Hopkins issued Scott Smith a one out walk, and that put runners on first and third for Alvinston with one out. Jason Hope followed with a groundout that was almost a double play, but Hope was able to leg it out, and Donald scored Alvinston’s fourth run in the process.

Ohsweken failed to touch up Indians hurler Brad Young in the fifth, but did make things close in the bottom of the sixth. Robert Bomberry led off with a triple, and Curtis Cornelius followed with an RBI single for the get close run. The Indians escaped further damage however, because of a double play to the end the inning.

With the score now 4-3, and Alvinston failing to score in their half of the seventh inning, it set things up for an interesting last three outs for the fans. Dave Hill led off the inning for Ohsweken with a double, but the Indians defence put away the next two batters, setting the stage for Luke Hopkins. Hopkins hammered a ball to deep centre field, but Kyle Vink was able to reel in the ball on the warning track for the game’s final out, thus preserving Alvinston’s 4-3 lead and ultimately the win.

Brad Young was the winning pitcher for Alvinston, allowing 3 runs, 7 hits, and striking out 4 to earn the imporant win. Darren Zack suffered the loss for Ohsweken.

Storming out of the gate
Before fans could settle into the bleacher seats or their lawn chairs in the outfield at Pine Grove Park, runs were plentiful.

And the offensive show continued through the Quay Street Brewery Blue Water Invitational fastpitch tournament opener Friday night.

The Port Huron Lanes Hurricanes scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back in a 14-8 victory against the Secory Flyers.

“I knew there were 6 to 7 of us who could hit, but we also had a lot of guys with little or no fastpitch experience,” Hurricanes Manager Gary Marinez said. “I was impressed with how we hit the ball.

“If we can continue to hit like that, we’ll be competitive this weekend.”

In the nightcap, the Alvinston (Ontario) Indians defeated Alexander’s Stallions 3-1.

The Hurricanes finished with 10 hits off a pair of Secory pitchers but also took advantage of some control problems (nine walks).

The top two hitters — Doug Kilpatrick and Greg Fowler — connected on solo home runs against the Flyers’ Chris McAuliffe.
