Wyevale Tribe win first Northern Ontario ISC II Qualifier

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

August 29-30, 2009
Sudbury, Ontario

WYEVALE TRIBE WIN FIRST NORTHERN ONTARIO ISC II QUALIFIER
SUDBURY NORTH STARS COME UP SHORT

Mother Nature did not co-operate this past weekend as the first ever Northern Ontario ISC II Qualifier was reduced to a one day affair. Originally the four teams were to play a single round robin on Saturday followed by a single elimination round on Sunday for a 9-game tournament but as the weather has been all summer long, this could not be accomplished. Saturday was a complete wash-out and therefore, the tournament chairperson decided to make it a one-day double knockout. After 15 hours and six games, Wyevale Tribe were the first-ever winners.

GOFL Playoffs underway

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Courtesy of our good friend Adam Brown, who manages the Eastern Ontario Fastball Blog

OTTAWA – The Greater Ottawa Fastball League playoffs (www.GOFL.ca) begin on Tuesday August 11. The regular season consisted of 89 games (one game was rained out and will not be made up as standings are not affected.)

Nine teams from across eastern Ontario and western Quebec participate in the men’s intermediate fastball league and all make the playoffs to compete for the I4C Trophy. Playoffs will be on hiatus during the ISC Tournament of Champions as two GOFL teams will be participating (Quyon COMBAT Flyers and Ottawa Team Easton).

Final standings: http://www.gofl.ca/standings.asp

“Play in” game to determine final seed:

Series A: Greely DNTW Eagles (#9) vs. Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric (#8)
The eighth and ninth places teams play a one game sudden death game to determine which squad will advance on to the GOFL quarter-finals. Greely finished the season winless at 0-18-1 while Fitzroy Harbour ended their rebuilding season at 5-14-1. Shannon Borho, Gord Flannery and Ryan Cox are the pitchers for Greely, while Anil Hayne (.455 BA) is their top hitter. Fitzroy Harbour has Bud Hanlon, Steve Cavanagh and 16-year old rookie Andy Barber that can throw. Lead off man Jon Daley (.411 BA) is the Electric’s main threat at the plate.

A1: Tuesday August 11 at 8:30pm in Fitzroy Harbour

Quarter-finals – all series best-of-three:

Series B: Winner of Series A vs. Stittsville 56ers (#1)
The winner of the play-in game gets has a quick turnaround to face GOFL defending champions Stittsville 56ers who took the regular season pennant with a 17-1-2 mark. Dan Bradley (11 wins) and Darren Featherstone (6 wins) throw for Stittsville. Dan Jessiman was the leading hitter for Stittsville with a .444 batting average and Scott Herriot was second in the GOFL with six home runs on the season.

B1: Wednesday August 12 at 8:30pm in Stittsville
B2 / B3: to be determined

Series C: Orleans Gators (#7) vs Ottawa Team Easton (#2)
Ottawa Team Easton was the only team to defeat the first place 56ers all year and were playoff runners up in 2008. Easton had a 14-4-1 record on the season. Orleans Gators, a junior-aged team, finished with a respectable 7-12-1 mark. Brad Porter had eleven wins pitching for Easton, and Jeff Murphy and Corey Costello also made pitching appearances for Ottawa. Kyle Gourgon (.383 BA) and Dave Tubman (.360 BA) are top hitters for Easton. Chad Hargrove, Jeff Barber and Cory Alkerton throw for Orleans. Joel Langford leads the Gators with a .420 batting average.

C1: Tuesday August 11 at 8:30pm in Stittsville
C2: Thursday August 13 at 8:30pm in Orleans
C3: to be determined

Series D: Ottawa Blitz (#6) vs Quyon COMBAT Flyers (#3)
Quyon, the only Quebec-based entry in the GOFL, finished the year with a 11-7-2 record, while the much-improved Ottawa Blitz ended at 8-11-1. The Flyers have Matt Greer and Drew Hathway on the slab. Top hitters for the COMBAT sponsored team are Greer with a league leading seven homers on the season and Nick Armitage who led the league with 19 RBIs. Jamie Blakely and Derick Bulley are the main chuckers for the Blitzos. Will Mood is the offensive leader for the Blitz with a .426 batting average.

D1: Wednesday August 12 at 7:00pm in Manotick
D2: Thursday August 13 at 8:00pm in Quyon
D3: to be determined

Series E: Carp I4C Victory (#5) vs Manotick Lomor Printers (#4)
The veteran Manotick team was in first place for much of the early part of the GOFL season but tailed off later in the campaign to finish fourth with a record of 10-7-3. Carp ended the year at 9-7-4. Manotick has Trevor Lahey and Paul Ceppi to throw. Calvin Medynski had a big year at the plate, leading the league amongst regular players with a .533 batting average. Carp counters with Neil Cooke, Trevor Wood and Billy Gerber as pitchers. Kevin McGuire hit .339 and had 14 RBIs for I4C.

E1: Wednesday August 12 at 9:00pm in Manotick
