Snappers win Lackawanna title

July 9th, 2007

The Niagara Snappers competed in the 2nd annual Mickey Brennan Memorial Tournament in Lackawanna, NY and came away with the title after losing their first game and having to play 7 more to win it including 5 on the Sunday. The Snappers got themselves into a hole early by losing to Ricola’s of New Jersey by a score of 1-0. Corey Costello and Jeff VanHooser locked into a classic pitchers battle with each giving up only 1 hit in the game and Costello striking out 19 to VanHooser’s 15.

(Editor’s Note: VanHooser is expected to be with #20 Ashland, OH Merchants at the ToC.)

The Snappers then reeled off victories of 11-2, 10-3, 8-1, 7-1, and 3-2 to make it back to the finals to face Ricola’s again. The offence would make up for their earlier mistakes at the Snappers pounded out 10-2 and 7-0 (mercy) victories to lay claim to the title. For the weekend, the Snappers outscored their opponents 56-12.

This was the first time for the Snappers in this tournament and we want to congratulate everyone associated with it. From the grounds crew to the umpires to the concessions, everything was top notch. We look forward to visiting next year to defend the title.

Peter Dobbin of the Snappers was named the tournament MVP going 14-26 for the weekend with 4 walks and 4 home runs.

Following is a brief summary of the tournament:

#12 Port Elgin Blue Devils win Wyevale tournament

July 3rd, 2007

Wyevale, ON

Port Elgin exacts some revenge on Bucktown for a losses at the Innerkip qualifier last weekend and in last year’s semi finals in Wyevale. GAME #18
Waterdown Hammer 5 I4C Victory 0
Waterdown opened the scoring in the top of the third inning on a two run inside-the-park homerun by Dave Brownhill. Joe Reeve, who had led off the inning two outs earlier, scored on the hit. In the fifth inning, Waterdown struck again, this time for three runs. Brownhill hit a one out double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Coe. Dave Kingdon, who reached base on an error scored on a triple by Kyle Davis. Davis rounded out the scoring when he was plated on a Carp error. GAME #19
Quyon Flyers 4 Scarborough Wolverines 0 (8 innings)
In a very well played game that seen each team only manage 3 hits during regulation, a play at the plate and the resulting clearing of the benches is what this game will be remembered for. After battling to a 0-0 tie through seven innings, Quyon’s bats came alive in the top of the eighth inning. After taking a 4-0 lead, Quyon runner Joran Graham made no attempt to slide at a play at the play and ran over the catcher. This resulted in both benches clearing and eventually the end of the game as Scarborough, when things had cooled down, did not return for their bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. In all there were 9 ejections, with Graham being suspended for his next game in the tournament. Steve McCord drove in two runs for Quyon.

Waterdown tied the score in the home half of the inning on an RBI single by John Kemp that scored Tim Coe. Donnaconna regained the lead in the third inning when Jean Pierre Savard delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Frederick St. Pierre, who had led off the inning with a base on balls. Waterdown rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when a passed ball allowed Tim Coe to score. Coe had led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a passed ball. Donnaconna immediately responded in their next at-bat. Johnathan Darveau lead off the inning with a single and was later thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on a ground out.
