Ontario Home League Program Affiliation request

May 27th, 2007

I am asking all men’s fastball leagues in Ontario to confirm their affiliation with the Ontario Home League Program. Affiliation is voluntary and is cost-free.

For the last few years, the Home League Program has seen teams from as many as 10 leagues from across the province send representatives to Hillsburgh to compete in the Ontario Challenge Cup.

We will again be holding a tournament in Hillsburgh August 24-25 for teams in the central and southwestern part of the province.

New this year will be the Eastern Ontario Challenge Cup to he held August 24-25 for teams in the eastern and northern part of the province. This tournament will be held in McNab/Braeside near Micksburg in the Ottawa Valley.

We would ask that the top team(s) in your league as of August 1 be asked to compete in the tournament.

The winning team in each tournament will receive a berth in the 2008 ISC II Tournament of Champions in Appleton, WI, giving them a year to raise funds for the trip.

Entry fee for each double knockout tournament is $200. This can be paid by the league, shared with the league and the team or paid solely by the team. The fee is due by August 5.

Please note that any team that wins an automatic berth to the 2008 WT or ToC by finishing in the top 4 at the 2007 ToC will not be eligible for the Challenge Cup tournaments.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thanks in advance for your participation and have a great season!

Cheers,

Fawcett Moving to the Bahamas?

May 25th, 2007

There is no truth to the rumor that Rob Fawcett is weighing a move to the Bahamas.

Major Signing in SoCal Announced

May 24th, 2007

Editor’s note: I did not post this story. See what happens when I leave town and leave the blog unlocked ? Thanks Blair, for mining the far reaches to find this story on an aging veteran….;-) I figured 3 innings would keep me under the radar. All I know is that the big guy better get in shape!

From the SoCal Hustlers website:

Friday, May 18
Hustlers do it AGAIN!!!

It just keeps getting better for the Hustler Organization. Not only did they acquire another veteran pitcher…..but a well know veteran at that. Looking ahead to nationals and wanting to bolster an already potent pitching staff….the Hustlers are happy to announce the addition of none other than Jim Flanagan to the team. Most of you know Jim from Fastpitchwest.com, but us locals of the Socal alliance and SCIFL know him better as a pitcher. And a good one at that. Sidelined with an injury early in last years season the Black Sox organization was forced to replace him and left him open for the free agent market. That’s all that was needed for the Hustler staff to jump at the chance to strengthen our bullpen. Coach Cole was quoted as saying “we’ll start him off slow and let him get back into pitching shape and he should be ready by nationals”. GM Proffitt was also quoted as saying “this is just what we needed to be a serious contender at NAFA”. Some of the negotiations were over heard and this tape was leaked out by “unknown sources”. The tape clearly shows that veteran Kenny Shaw has some influence on who plays for the Hustlers. Here is just some of what Flanagan allegedly said during those negotiations. http://eteamz.active.com/hustlers/sounds/Mybestfreind[1].wav

California Lumberkings Qualify for 2007 ISC II Tournament of Champions

May 8th, 2007

The California Lumberkings will be back at the ISC II Tournament of Champions for the second straight year, having won the ISC II berth from the Red Rock Tournament this past weekend in St. George, Utah. The Lumberkings were the top finishing ISC II team in the tournament, including a win over the Consolation Bracket champions, Castlewood II, from Utah, and took ISC World #15 ranked Portland De Marini to extra innings, before dropping a tough one run game.

The Lumberkings were the first team from California to compete in the ISC II Tournament of Champions, and did well, qualifying for the playoff round, and winning their first playoff game, before falling in extra innings to a then-unbeaten Kitchener team.

The Lumberkings have improved their roster for 2007, adding pitcher Mike Egerdeen, who pitched well in last year’s ISC II for JRW of Yakima Washington, surrendering but one earned run in the tournament, as well as young Anthony Martinez, who pitched his 23-and-under team to the National title last summer. Hard throwing right hander Darren Strang, from British Columbia will be back with the Lumberkings for his second season.

Men’s fastball league declines
Sixteen teams to play in South Perth Men’s Fastball League; new Mitchell
team joins

By Andy Bader
Wednesday May 02, 2007
The decline in men’s fastpitch softball is starting to reflect in the number
of teams in the South Perth Men’s Fastball League (SPMFL), as 16 teams will
compete for the 2007 championship this September.
Another two teams ceased operations for this upcoming season, the longtime
Fullarton A’s as well as the Milverton AW Millwrights, while the SPMFL
welcomed back the Waterloo Jr. Hallman Twins from a year’s hiatus. The St.
Pauls Generals, another longtime franchise, ceased operations one year ago
as well.
Also new to the league this season is the Mitchell Jr. Chiefs, a team of
almost entirely first-year junior-aged players who have played together, for
the most part, since they were mite age. Coach/manager Calvin Annis has a
number of players eager to play with the newfound junior club, and their
early team fundraising initiatives have proven successful thus far.
The Jr. Chiefs will play their home games on Monday nights, and bring back
to two the number of Mitchell teams in the SPMFL, joining the Mets, who once
again will play their home games Wednesdays.

The SPMFL regular season doesn’t begin until May 22, with each team in the
league playing 22 games, capped, as usual, by the playoff tournament in
Mitchell Sept. 14-16th.
The league also has four teams amalgamating for 2007, the Linwood Chiefs and
the Moorefield Dukes are joining forces and will be known as the Linwood
86ers. Another merging of two established clubs, the Tavistock Merchants and
the St. Marys Gunners, will see the team be known as Tavistock, but they
will play half of their home games in St. Marys to keep the game’s presence
alive with the future hope of recessitating their own team once again.
There will be two eight-team divisions in the league this year – the
Smith/Egli Division, who will have the two Mitchell teams, Sebringville,
Monkton, Shakespeare Falcons, Shakespeare Colts, Hickson and Tavistock play.
The other eight-team division, known as the Arand/Thomson Division, will
feature Bridgeport (the two-time defending champions), Breslau, two Elmira
teams, the Cubs and Juniors, Linwood, Harriston, Wellington (formerly known
as Elora) and Waterloo Jrs.
Other meaningful fastball dates to mark on your local calendar include the
17th annual Mitchell Mets tournament June 8-10 which will feature 16 men’s
teams (including the hosts and the Jr. Chiefs) and eight ladies clubs; a
doubleheader in Sebringville on June 15 which will see the Canadian national
team take on New Zealand; an eight-team junior men’s tournament June 22-24
hosted by the Jr. Chiefs, in conjunction with a bantam baseball tournament;
and the 4th World Fastball Invitational in Monkton Canada Day long weekend.
More details on these local events will be available closer to the dates.

The tournament will feature 35 teams from across North America playing a four-game round robin schedule in seven pools of five teams each.
