#12 Port Elgin Blue Devils win Wyevale tournament

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Wyevale, ON

Port Elgin exacts some revenge on Bucktown for a losses at the Innerkip qualifier last weekend and in last year’s semi finals in Wyevale. Port Elgin built a 5-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to victory from there going 6-0 on the weekend and capturing the championship and the Diamond Head Sprinkler $1500 first prize. Bucktown proved that their results in Innerkip should not be considered out of the ordinary as they once again make it to the final while beating some quality teams along the way (#11 Kitchener Outlaws, #27 Scarborough Wolverines, #6 Palermo Athletics).

We would like to thank all of the teams, umpires, and fans who made the event our best yet, and look forward to making improvements in 08 to make it an even better event.

GAME #18
Waterdown Hammer 5 I4C Victory 0
Waterdown opened the scoring in the top of the third inning on a two run inside-the-park homerun by Dave Brownhill. Joe Reeve, who had led off the inning two outs earlier, scored on the hit. In the fifth inning, Waterdown struck again, this time for three runs. Brownhill hit a one out double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Coe. Dave Kingdon, who reached base on an error scored on a triple by Kyle Davis. Davis rounded out the scoring when he was plated on a Carp error. Carp had runners in scoring position during three innings, however they were unable to push a run across against Tim Neil.

GAME #19
Quyon Flyers 4 Scarborough Wolverines 0 (8 innings)
In a very well played game that seen each team only manage 3 hits during regulation, a play at the plate and the resulting clearing of the benches is what this game will be remembered for. After battling to a 0-0 tie through seven innings, Quyon’s bats came alive in the top of the eighth inning. After taking a 4-0 lead, Quyon runner Joran Graham made no attempt to slide at a play at the play and ran over the catcher. This resulted in both benches clearing and eventually the end of the game as Scarborough, when things had cooled down, did not return for their bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. In all there were 9 ejections, with Graham being suspended for his next game in the tournament. Steve McCord drove in two runs for Quyon.

Both teams struck for a run in their first at-bat. Donnaconna scored their run when Michael Dumas tripled with one out and later scored. Waterdown tied the score in the home half of the inning on an RBI single by John Kemp that scored Tim Coe. Donnaconna regained the lead in the third inning when Jean Pierre Savard delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Frederick St. Pierre, who had led off the inning with a base on balls. Waterdown rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when a passed ball allowed Tim Coe to score. Coe had led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a passed ball. Donnaconna immediately responded in their next at-bat. Johnathan Darveau lead off the inning with a single and was later thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on a ground out. Canada East (Innerkip) ISC II Qualifier
Sunday June 24

Another beautiful day for ball in Innerkip. Things got underway at 8:55 am between Alvinston & Harriston, while the Port Elgin-Elmira game was delayed for 52 minutes due to some overzealous diamond watering by the Innerkip fire department. Harriston and Port Elgin won the early morning loser’s bracket games while Bucktown Bees, Phillip Martin and Lee Hopkins continued to confound and amaze, scoring three off Wyevale ace Jason Giffen in the first inning of the winner’s bracket final game, crusing to a 4-2 win. Harriston then dismantled Port Elgin 6-2 to meet Wyevale in the loser’s bracket final. Wyevale would manage only two hits off Scott Smith, both by Graham McNab, but he made them count, blasting a lead off home run in the top of the first and doubling him the game-winning run in the top of the 9th. McNab then came on in relief of starter Jason Giffen in the first final game after Giffen gave up five runs. McNab held down the Bees the rest of the way while the Tribe scored six in the bottom of the second and tacked on three more in the 6th to win 9-5. The “if” game was scoreless into the 6th, when Mike Kelly singled. Pinch runner Chris Bell stole second. Mike Lambie reached on an infield single advancing Bell to third and he scored on an RBI ground out by Cory Kelly. Jason Giffen came on for McNab in the 7th with two aboard and struck out the side to preserve the 1-0 win and the no-hitter. Congratulations to Wyevale on winning the 2007 ISC II Canada East (Innerkip) Qualifier.

Canada East (Innerkip) Saturday Scores

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Canada East ISC II Qualifier in Innerkip, On
Saturday June 23

Perfect day for ball here in Innerkip. High blue skies with temperatures in the mid 20’s. Good crowds for many of the games throughout the day and the beer tent was buzzing about the upsets. Elora Brewers dropped their second game of the tournament and were sent home early by Hickson Reds. Wyevale Tribe sent Elmira Cubs to the loser’s bracket with a thoroughly convincing 8-0 win as Jason Giffen tossed his second 1-hitter of the tournament while Lee Hopkins of Bucktown continued to be the hottest batter, driving in both of Bucktown’s runs in their 2-0 win over Glencoe Astros, giving him 7 in the Bees’ first two games. Bucktown’s Phillip Martin also continues to impress, allowing only four hits to Port Elgin in a 2-1 win to advance to the undefeated game. Giffen has given up only four hits all tournament as Wyevale has made their way to the an improbable winner’s bracket final against Bucktown.
